We bought a Tempurpedic last winter. I loved it. However, my wife could never get comfortable, so we returned it for a conventional coil spring mattress.

As an aside, the day the Tempurpedic was delivered, the temperature was about 15 F. The mattress was literally a frozen brick... took about 2 days before there was any "give" in it.

Come 2020 my bed that I bought in 2016 was all saggy and crappy, and so I bought a new one. I'm not complaining about the 2016 one. That was the most dirt cheap one I could find, since I had little money to spend in 2016. So I bought a nicer one in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic. It's a queen-size, the size I prefer, but now it's sagging. It sags on the left side, the side I prefer to sleep on. I'm super disappointed that it's already sagging after only 2 years. I don't remember exactly what I paid, but it was a local Omaha, NE company, and it was probably $400 - 500. It felt like excellent quality when I first got it. It was a nice queen-size mattress and corresponding box spring. I loved it when I got it. I hate it now that it sags so much.

Makes me think maybe for a quality bed you simply have to invest more. I've been looking online at extremely respected, high-end beds, the brands of which are Tempur-Pedic and Purple (links below). Is that what I need to do? If I need a bed that is cozy-comfy and will last, do I need to just put up a much bigger chunk of change for something higher end? I've heard great things about both Tempur-Pedic and Purple. The other one you hear a lot about is the Sleep Number bed, but I don't know that the bed needs to be adjustable like that.

$400 will get you a bed that sags. You’re better off pulling one out of a dump.

We have been considering a new mattress as well, but my question is, should I buy a mattress without trying getting a feel for it at a mattress store? I know some of these mattress companies will take it back after a trial period but if you dispose of your old mattress then you are stuck finding a new one if you don't like the one your bought. Maybe I am overthinking it.
These new companies have made this a real option. We bought a king size "Puffy Lux", which is a highly rated and expensive mattress that they deliver in a box. I thought it was great but my wife hated it. We sent it back and bought another one. No problems with the refund. We're both happy with the new one (Dream cloud). I'm just happy if I'm not sleeping on the floor. To the OP, spend the money on the mattress. Always spend your $ on things you use every day.

You're going to spend about a third of your life on it during it's "lifespan". Do you really think cheaping out is the way to go on that?

I didn't consider the $400 - $500 range to be cheaping out, but I'm seeing now that I'm probably going to have to invest more. When I first moved here, I slept on air mattresses. That was cheaping out, but I had to back then. All my money had gone into the move.

And now a lot of it goes to battling Amber Heard.

Now that you mention Amber Heard, this problem must be her fault. I'd bet she snuck into my place and banged a sumo wrestler on my bed, ruining it. Ew. Now I've really got to get rid of this bed.

Maybe I'll go back to an air mattress until I can afford a high-end bed.

If Amber Heard were involved, your mattress would have a little surprise on it.

Mos5 mattress companies have a 100 night trial period. We bought a saatva a few years ago. We like it but don't love it. Ended up getting different mattress toppers thru the years. Better but still not great

I'm going to see if I can stand this thing until I can come up with something like $1600 for a high-end purple bed. They have a guarantee that you can return it after a year if you hate it.

$1600 ain't chump change. Gonna take me some time to raise the money, and I don't buy stuff on credit. I don't believe in that.

I've actually had decent luck with a company called Sleep Innovations. Fair pricing. Purchased a couple off of Amazon and it shows up in a box all shrink-wrapped.

A good mattress that lasts 10 plus years will be well over 2K bro:flagwave: In the case of mattresses you do get what you pay for

My Spring Air Pillow Top mattress has never sagged. But, as you so aptly said, you do get what you pay for, especially when it comes to bedding. And the price of the bed set with frame was over 2K. And I have owned it over 10 years.
