And considering what Jerry did between 2007 and that point makes that decision even more ridiculous. It was a clueless move from a GM with no answers.
And then consider the fact that at that point, Ratliff had been ineffective at NT for several years. And we had a DLine filled w/ traffic cones such as Spears and Kenyon Coleman.

But not to worry.. the next Deion will fix it.

I think people have forgotten how absolutely useless Claiborne was as a defender on the field. He would often mysteriously get magnetized to blockers or “lose” his footing and be on the ground as the play went by him.

I don’t expect corners to be Ronnie Lott, but if they aren’t committing to the physical aspects of being a defensive player, they need to make up for it by being excellent in pass coverage which he didn’t do.

Claiborne had an OK rookie year, then injuries plagued him the rest of his Cowboys career. Though there were moments it looked like he was turning the corner an injury soon followed and never got any momentum. I remember being very excited about the pick at that time and he didn't have medical concerns coming out of college that would have created a red flag. He was one of the bigger draft busts in Cowboys history, but not because of his play on the field. Had he been healthy I still think he could have had a good career with the Cowboys even if he didn't live up to his draft prospects.

Diggs is just on another level and we're lucky to find him in the 2nd round.

“Our scouts graded him (Claiborne) the highest of any DB we’ve scouted.” — Jerry after trading up to draft Mo Claiborne 6th overall in the 2012 Draft

Claiborne
85 games (74 starts)
7 INTs
49 passes defensed

Diggs
31 games (30 starts)
15 INTs
41 passes defensed
I guess the scouts have been better recently than back then.

Mo Clai wasn't awful but wasn't good either.
It was probably one of our worst moves, given the high value of the pick.
I was SO pissed when we traded up for him, especially after just signing Carr.

Then again, getting Diggs in the 2nd was pretty great, so there's that.

Generally, Dallas has drafted better than most teams

DeMarcus Lawrence, Fletcher Cox, Quinton Bohanna, Osi, Micah Parsons, Sam Williams, Dorrance Armstrong and Dante Fowler would be fun.

Mo was always exposed when required to cover. The scouting reports predraft were quite vague on his coverage skills. It's like they couldn't stop praising his ball skills long enough to analyze whether he could actually cover anyone.

Giving up both our 1st and 2nd rounders for that pick was brutal.

Bobby Wagner went right after our 1snd round pick and we licked him.
2nd. SEA took him w/ the 47th pick, we were slated to pick 45th.

He was pretty bad on the field.

I'm just not understanding where the thought is coming from that he wasn't a complete bust.

Arguments that Claiborne was the best corner since Deion Sanders should have sent warning flags and sirens screaming, warning us against a trade up for him.
Jerry Jones must be into clones because he's always trying to find the next _________. And when he "thinks" he has him in his sights, he moves heaven and earth to get him.
But anyone who has seen Deion play KNEW Claiborne was not in Deion's class. Not even his elementary class.

The site LSU fan at the time, Boutteman, was horrified when we traded up to get him. He predicted bust from the start.

Thinking MO was like Deion was just ignorant. That is some bad scouting. (Not pointing that at you, BTW.)

Mo was a playmaker, but lacked coverage skills. As a CB, if you can't cover, nothing else matters.
I don’t disagree. But to their credit they said he was the best corner they’ve scouted since Deion which is less outlandish.

In Jerry’s defense….he didn’t scout him his scouts did. They came away with that evaluation.
