The case for drafting an OT in round 1

It may seem like that position is locked up, but consider:

1. Football is taking its toll on Tyron. Tyler Smith was drafted to play guard, so we need to think about the future.
2. Steele will be coming back from a torn ACL and MCL. How he will play coming off of rehab is a big question mark. I know he’s the RKG, but do we want to give him a big extension coming off of a blown out knee?

McGovern and Steele can both be gone next season. This position has to be addressed

I’d 100% draft an OT in round 1.

Kick Tyler inside where his ceiling is higher.

Where do you get that Tyler Smith was drafted to be a guard. If he was drafted to be a guard he would certainly be playing guard not left tackle

I don’t think this is a strong tackle class (at least at the top), so I expect it’s probably not going to be BPA when we’re drafting, but otherwise I don’t have a problem with OT in the first. I think Tyler Smith a great guard and an ok tackle. Maybe he continues to develop on the outside, but he got abused by Thibodeaux and he’ll see him twice every year for the foreseeable future.

edit: My name to keep an eye on for a late 1 tackle would be Anton Harrison out of OU. Love their center Andrew Raym as well.

To be fair, Thibodeux has been abusing a lot of tackles over this past month. SNF showed his stats against the Commanders... 7 tackles, 3 TFLs, a sack, and a scoop-n-score TD, all in the first half. Just a man among boys.

Agreed! Go get a OT or OG. McGovern is gone and Peters too. Farniok will be back, but Waletzko n Ball at OT is concerning.

I think you get the best OT/OG in the 1st. I don’t think people are believing Tyler is a G anymore. He continues to play really well at OT for his rookie season. Tyron has just proved he could be an incredible swing tackle for years to come and preserve his body that way, and weirdly I think he would love that role.

I like the idea of an OT, but if a rockstar OG is sitting there you gotta take him over a boom or bust OT

peter skoronski,nwestern...some think he'll be a guard.
tough player.
versatile.

broderick jones,georgia.
i love all those georgia dawgs.

later in the draft...if they wanna...jarrett patterson, notre dame...played extremely well at og this season.
can also play center.

but if broderick jones or pete skoronski are there when we pick...i'd have 0 problem with either.

I'd rather go DE or CB if one is available that's worthy.. How did spending all those assets on on the Oline work out? a great OL and weakness across the board..

The cowboys drafted Smith because they believed he had the upside to play LT. They were right. And there is no reason to believe he won’t improve and be even better next year. In a very good CB class I would be shocked if they don’t CB in round 1.

Smith has performed admirably as we’ve needed him too but I wouldn’t ignore drafting an OT if it’s BPA.

Smith leads the NFL in penalties, has given up 6 sacks and has had a few games giving up 7 pressures. I’m sure he’ll continue to develop and maybe he can turn into an above average LT but I still think his ceiling is higher at LG.

He's already being labeled as a holder. Connor Williams Part Dos.
