I'm sure you're right, but still, "Most enjoyable for the average Joe" doesn't necessarily (or often) mean "Best Picture". There had to be something better than a virtual "repeat of the original" sequel.
There’s definitely a balance between the two.

Nobody watches awards for films they’ve never seen or can’t relate to.

And they’ve realized that.

The reverse is also true, a lot of times these art house films have little appeal to most of the general public. It's hard to make a case for some movies that feel more like a niche film for movie snobs.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods Final Poster Released

By Russ Burlingame | comicbook.com
January 25, 2023

Warner Bros. has released their final theatrical poster for Shazam!: Fury of the Gods, the long-awaited sequel to 2019's adaptation of DC's Captain Marvel mythology. In the new movie, the Shazam Family squares off against the children of gods, played by Rachel Zegler, Helen Mirren, and Lucy Liu. The new poster gives a glimpse of every character mentioned above, as well as the wizard Shazam himself (played by Guardians of the Galaxy's Djimon Hounsou. The film is directed by Shazam! filmmaker David F. Sandberg and will finally be in theaters in March.

Buried in one corner, you can also see what appears to be a dragon flying over an intact version (or approximation) of the Acropolis, with the ground beneath it split, and statues flanking the building.

You can see the new poster, via IGN, below.

‘Titans’ & ‘Doom Patrol’ To End With Seasons 4 On HBO Max

By Nellie Andreeva | Deadline
January 25, 2023

titans-hbo-max.jpg

Two of the DC series on HBO Max, Titans and Doom Patrol, will be coming to an end. Both recently wrapped their six-episode Season 4A runs on the streamer, and the upcoming second halves of their fourth seasons will be the shows’ final chapters. Both had been crafted to give the series a proper ending.

Titans and Doom Patrol, both from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, are the last live-action series from the slate of the now-defunct DC Universe. They made the transition to HBO Max after the first two seasons when DC Universe folded. Titans and Doom Patrol then ran for two more seasons, with the creatives behind both mapping those seasons to complete their story arcs.

Both Titans and Doom Patrol have been well received by critics, with high marks on Rotten Tomatoes, and have done well on the platform, according to the scarce HBO Max performance data available. They, along with other DC shows that are coming to an end, including The Flash and Stargirl on the CW, close a chapter in Berlanti Prods.’ tenure at Warner Bros. Television Group, which was just extended with a massive new deal. Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC strategy has been undergoing an examination following the recent appointment of new toppers, James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Not surprising though. DC Universe did not seemingly have serious long-term backing of the studio. James Gunn's is swinging his production axe all over the place. I only wished Gunn surrendered some real tangible info about what will eventually replace the old guard.

I read this article yesterday and sorry to see them both go. It really was a shame that DC Universe didn't have a better long term plan and backing for their platform, those fledgling projects were much better than expected. I expected them to be kinda cheesy, low production value, so-so acting and scripts, but they were all really quite good. That early sampling gave me some hope, if they can keep putting out this quality of content, I liked it more than anything the CW was putting out, then maybe...... just maybe they got a chance, but........ :(

Still mad that Swamp Thing didn't get more of a chance, it was really showing some promise.....

Meet the Titans, DC Comics' New Justice League

By Justine Carter | Yahoo! Entertainment/Gizmodo
January 28, 2023

For years, the Titans have been one of those superhero teams that DC Comics hasn’t entirely known what to do with. The members who’ve defined the superhero team have mainly been locked off to other team or solo books during the “Rebirth” era, or headlined limited books as a way to semi-link up with the recently ended Titans show. But as the DC universe is entering a new dawn, the publisher is putting a more active effort in pushing the team to the big leagues.

To that point, Tom Taylor and Nicola Scott are working on a new Titans book whose intended mission statement is taking the team “to the forefront of the DC Universe.” Revealed earlier in the week, the new book will pick up where Taylor and Bruno Redondo’s Nightwing #100, which ended with a new Titans Tower being set up in Bloodhaven. Along with Nightwing himself, the book will be headlined by Raven, Beast Boy, Starfire, Cyborg (who’s also headlining a solo book from Morgan Hampton and Tom Raney), Donna Troy’s Wonder Girl, and Wally West as the Flash. And what’s more, the Titans are intended to replace the Justice League as DC’s premier team, though the League itself will still be around in the current DC publishing line.

10 Of The Darkest DC Animated Movies

By Kaylee McNabb | CBR
January 28, 2023

The DC animated multiverse is vast, and the films aren't afraid to stray from the classic tales of heroes who save the day. Sometimes the villains win, or a good plan goes south. When these things happen, DC's animated films get dark. Not only do worlds end up destroyed, but the resulting casualties can be brutal, which causes even the best of heroes to lose faith in their cause.

What makes these DC animated movies so grueling and dark is the traumas they put their characters through. There are wars, tribulations, and the loss of loved ones, there are some stories that even die-hard DC fans find difficult to watch.

Chronicle Vs. Brightburn: Which Is The Better Alternative Superhero Film?

By Rich Knight | CinemaBlend
January 28, 2023

7ldjBoO.png

Can we even consider these "superhero" films?

So, let’s just say that you got off the Marvel hype train, and you don’t care one whit about James Gunn’s version of the DC Universe or the new Superman. That said, you still like superheroes and don’t want to give up on them. What do you do? Well, I’ll tell you what you do. You ignore the MCU and the DCU (All cinematic universes for that matter!), and just watch some “alternative” superhero movies. I’m talking about superhero films that aren’t even connected to any major brands, and are totally original projects.

Well, if you’re into that sort of thing, then I have two great movies for you, and they're 2012’s Chronicle, and 2019’s Brightburn. In fact, I love both movies so much that I’m going to do a very Marvel/DC-esque thing and pit them against each other. That’s right, forget Batman v Superman (No, really. Forget it. Or at least try). This is all about Chronicle Vs. Brightburn, baby, and which is the better alternative superhero film.

The article starts off with a good question. Both were disappointments in my eyes but I would give Chronicle the edge between the two. Brightburn did have Billie Eilish's Bad Guy playing during the ending credits, so it wasn't all bad, lol.

Some Chronicle trivia is that it was first time Michael B. Jordan dipped his toe into the superhero genre. It came out several years before his appearances in Fantastic Four (puke) and Black Panther.

The Next Generation of DC Movies and TV Has Arrived...

By Tim Beedle | DC Comics
January 30, 2023

From the days of Crisis on Infinite Earths, DC has understood the importance of new starts, taking our favorite superheroes in unexpected new directions and establishing a DC Universe that reflects the world of today. It’s certainly been true for our comics, and it’s equally true for our many movies and TV series.

Last year, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that blockbuster filmmaker James Gunn and producer extraordinaire Peter Safran had been hired as Co-Chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios, the new studio tapped with overseeing all DC film, TV, animation and game projects going forward. Since then, of course, DC fans have all pretty much been wondering the same thing: what new movies and TV series are they working on?

Well, the wait is over DC fans! Gunn and Safran have unveiled the first ten interconnected DC Studios projects—five movies and five HBO Max TV series. And yes, we said interconnected. All ten of them are set within the same shared universe and will frequently share characters. However, while not included below, there will be films set outside the shared continuity—like the already announced Joker: Folie à Deux from director Todd Phillips and Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman sequel.

DC Studios Boss Addresses Ezra Miller's Future as The Flash After the DC-Resetting Movie

By Anthony Lund | MovieWeb
January 31, 2023

The future of the DCU has been in flux for a few months now, and nothing has been more uncertain than Ezra Miller’s role in the franchise going forward. Set to reprise their role as Barry Allen in The Flash this year, Miller’s off screen actions have brought into question their potential reprisal of the role again beyond the DCU resetting movie. In among the many announcements made today about DC Studios upcoming slate, Peter Safran addressed Miller’s possible return as part of the new DCU. He said:

“Ezra is completely committed to their recovery. We’re fully supportive of that journey that they’re on right now. When the time is right, when they feel they are ready to have the discussion, we’ll all figure out what the best way forward is, but right now, they are completely focused on their recovery. In our conversations with them over the last couple of months, it feels like they’re making enormous progress.”

I like the idea of finally having an interconnected Universe, but the project choices feel a bit underwhelming to me.

W00T! The return of Swamp Thing!

Green Lanterns in a "True Detective" type series........ Space Cops: Precinct Earth I don't know how to feel about that, on one hand it sounds like it could be interesting and on the other hand, it could be monumentally bad..... I dunno

I am glad seeing Gunn tap into the wide ranging DC Universe. It should never be restricted to the handful of the most known characters.

His inclusion of Wildstorm characters does peek my interest. To be honest, I never bought any of the issues before or after DC acquired it but I do remember seeing them on newsstands.

My hope is that same enthusiasm will eventually introduce the Dakota/Earth-M Milestone characters at some point--especially if he really wants the reimagined DCU to gain a real edge. Both Wildstorm and Milestone started in the early 90's and I loved characters and teams like Static, Icon & Rocket and Blood Syndicate.

The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow project is what interests me the most from Gunn's announcement. To say I was disappointed with CBS/The CW series would be an understatement. I am eager to see how the character is brought back, even if it starts with Kara Zor-El growing up in Argo City lol.
