Daniel Jeremiah's top 50: 2023 NFL Draft prospect rankings 1.0

Really good is a stretch for me. I think he’s comparable to Schultz who is an average NFL TE.

Neither are dynamic. And if I’m spending a premium pick on a TE I want someone who is dynamic.
I want a TE than block and catch. If we are going more ground based, a TE that can run and get blown up on blocks like Schultz is a non-starter for me.

We were one of the best running teams in football with Schultz before Steele went down.

Like his pass catching I think he’s grown into being an average blocker which is all we need.

He's not a very good blocker at all.

Too often we fall in love with raw athleticism and projections. That's how we end up with a guy like Hill at DT or Charlton at DE.

I wouldn't take a TE at 26 anyway. But if they are open to taking a TE, Mayer makes more sense than someone like Washington.

Coaches from the McVay tree will be drooling over Washington. They all want that big Tyler Higbee, Kittle, Marcedes Lewis type of TE who can block like a 6th lineman, so they can run the ball while still lining up in 3 WR sets. Washington can do that right away, while maybe developing as a pass catcher later. He could be a key cog in that offense.

I don't actually know that much about the McCarthy / Schottenheimer run scheme, but I don't think TE is a key piece in it. I can't even remember a TE who MM had in Green Bay, aside from Jermichael Finley, and he was basically a giant WR. Good player too.

Anyway, if TE's not a premium position for McCarthy, I would be fine with rolling out Schultz or Ferguson and spending our 1st rounder on a player with higher impact.

Yea, never said he was…said he was average.

I’m todays NFL most teams are ok with average if you get more upside in the passing game. I just think Schultz was average all around.

I want no part of a TE in the 1st. I like the class a lot but no one that is a sure fire 1st rounder unless Mayer runs like a 4.6 which i highly doubt he will.
