Logic Points To OL In The 1st Round

With the signing of Gilmore (insane value), I believe OL (OG) now has the highest chance of being the 1st round selection. You can make a case for WR, TE, RB, DT, but I think OL is the highest probability

While you can theoretically make do with what you have at OL, or even resign Peters, that is a suspect OL that 1 injury away from yikes. Tyler Smith is far from proven, Martin is aging, Tyron is Mr Glass, and Biadasz is just ok.

WR may be construed as more of a need, but the draft has deep talent, plenty of FAs out there, you still have Tolbert that might surprise you.
 
I could see OL in round 1, but definitely don't see it as any lock. Don't need first round talent for a Guard.

We fans have no real idea what Farniok, Ball and Waletzko might offer. Cowboys certainly have a feel.

I still expect to see a playmaker in round 1.

I think you have the possible first round positions right. They could go WR, TE, RB, OL, or DL at pick 26 and be ok no matter which position they take.

With just one pickup of a solid-to-good WR in free agency, the team has done a hell of a job of putting themselves in the position of taking BPA at whichever one of they think are best. It really is an excellent job by Dallas. Gilmore was a grand slam homer.

  • A guy like Kincaid, if he is there would do a lot to open up the defense… if not then Dallas is fine with Ferguson / Hendershot.
  • Want Robinson or Gibbs, if one of them are there? Go for it. Otherwise, pick a good RB in the mid-rounds and roll.
  • Zay Flowers or JSN? That’d be great. They would keep the WR pipeline flowing with talented guys.
  • Decide that Schmitz is just too talented and tough to pass on? Hell yeah, bring on that guy to play LG now and move to C next year when Biadasz is a free agent.
  • I don’t really see a great candidate for DL at 26, but if they decide that Adetomiwa Adebawore is just too talented to pass up as an edge / 3-tech pass rusher, I’d definitely be onboard with that. He is insanely physically gifted.
I can see a situation where any of those guys are the pick, just depending on how it falls. This is exactly how it is supposed to be done and how you keep your drafts among the best in the league.

I really think the team likes Waletzko. He is mean as hell, tough, long and athletic. He just needed to get a little stronger and get his shoulder that kept popping out repaired. I remember reading something last pre-season that made me think they really like him.

Waletzko was brought in (along with Tyler Smith) when Dallas had determined that they wanted aggression and toughness out of their guys. Both of those guys have it in spades.

I have no problem with OL in the 1st RD but i feel using so many 1st RD picks on OL is not the best use of resources.
 
I don't like first round guards, man. Their learning curve eats up most of their rookie contract, and the second contract is often where they put in their best work. Signing vets is the ideal way to do it.

But if we were willing to let McGovern walk for a nice second contract, I don't think we'll be willing to spend for anyone else. So an early round guard it is. Sounds like it may be Avila.

I really do think they like Avila a lot.
 
For a quality OT all in. For an interior OL hard pass.

No blue chippers and low positional value.
 
I've been beating this drum for a while. OL is a huge need, especially if this team wants to run the ball more and more effectively. I wouldn't hesitate to draft another OT and I have zero concern about spending a first on a all-pro-bowl type guard, ala Zack Martin.

exactly and Martin isnt getting any younger either. This is a great time to draft a versatile guy like Smitz. He can play at a high level day no matter which spot we decide to use him in. A player like that is special. I'd start him at LG day 1.
 
As of right now we still have holes at WR, DT, LG, LB, and arguably TE. Not sure how LG is the obvious need over any other position

Last time the Dallas Cowboys were elite was 92-95.
Larry Allen - 2nd round
Eric Williams - 3rd round
Mark Stepnoski - 3rd round
Kevin Gogan - 8th round
John Gesek - 10th round
Nate Newton - UDFA and USFL guy

So none of them were 1st rounders and currently
T. Smith -- 1st round, both of them
Martin - 1st round
Bisdasz - 3rd round
Steele - UDFA

How many more assets need to be put into OL?

You make a fair point but I ask, how many of our later rd o-line picks have been any where near that good, or even panned out for us in the last 10-20 years?
This team drafts top talent well, but back end talent, not so much. The o-line rebuild is under way but it needs to continue. We will lose both Tyron and Zack within the next couple of years at best. Then what will we have?

I'm not saying take O-line no matter what, cuz if a true blue star WR, CB or DE/DT falls to us at 26 I wouldn't be opposed to it. And I doubt JJ would be able to help himself anyway. I just think the value the board will give us a great shot at helping the line.

Spot on.

It also doesn’t matter how good the OL is if no one is getting open consistently and making plays outside of Lamb.
 
I love drafting the trenches early. With that said, it appears shopping for older pro bowl OL later in the summer could work well. Peters played very well for the money spent.
 
unless someone really wants steele and we let them take him for a 2nd round pick, i dont think OL is the hands down favorite. I would put WR as the favorite unless we sign someone.
