10 Highest-Grossing Movie Franchises Of All Time
By Brian Anderson | CBR
March 12, 2023

Some people may complain that too much of what ends up in the movie theaters are sequels and reboots, but film franchises exist because they are successful. Movie studios produce entertainment, but their actual business is making money and they aren't stupid. If one film makes a lot of money, chances are a second and third will too.

If audiences embrace certain films and characters, it only makes sense to give them more of what they want. This approach has certainly resulted in some pretty dreadful sequels, but it has also given birth to some amazing and beloved series. The highest-grossing franchises of all time didn't get to the top by being mediocre.

Karen Gillan Teases Nebula’s Fate In ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ At SXSW

By Anthony D'Alessandro | Deadline
March 11, 2023

As Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 barrels the Marvel Studios’ franchise toward its conclusion, Karen Gillan, stopping in Deadline’s SXSW studio provided a glimpse as to how life is shaping up for Thanos’ adopted daughter and Gamora’s adopted sister, Nebula, in the threequel.

“Now we’re seeing Nebula post the death of the source of her trauma, Thanos. He’s been eliminated from the story, and now we’re seeing her character become a little bit of the person that she should have been had that not happened to her,” Gillan told Deadline.

Cranky and combative Nebula’s idea of bliss now is “her new family with the new Guardians and letting love in for the first time, rather than the defense mechanism always triggering. Allowing her to be loved and to love,” said the actress who was at SXSW for the world premiere of her movie Late Bloomers from director Lisa Steen and screenwriter Anna Greenfield.

In the third movie from filmmaker James Gunn, Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill is still reeling from the loss of Zoe Saldana’s Gamora. He must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them. Gunn has also expressed in interviews how important it was for him to wrap Rocket Raccoon’s story. An enemy in part 3 is the High Evolutionary played by Chukwudi Iwuji. At San Diego Comic-Con, the actor, appearing in full costume, exclaimed to Hall H, “Thank you for inspiring me for how vomitous you all are…I can’t wait to dissect all of you and see what I can learn.”

DC Announced New Comic Runs for Wonder Woman, Flash, and More

By Justin Carter | Yahoo! Entertainment/Gizmodo
March 11, 2023

eb67a4530f2202787ee2bec079f0174a

It’s still fairly early into the new year, and DC Comics is still gradually teasing out its lineup of books under the “Dawn of DC” banner. New publishing lines don’t just mean wholly new books, it means new creative teams get a shot at long-running heavy hitters, usually the solo books. We’re seeing this right now with Josh Williamson and Jamal Campbell on Superman, and it’s continuing with both the Flash and Wonder Woman, who’ll get new teams this fall.

Starting in September, Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) and Daniel Sampere (Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths) will be taking over Wonder Woman from Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad, and their variety of artists. The latter creative team will end things with June’s oversized Wonder Woman #800 before the new team starts things off with a story that sees all Amazons banned from entering the United States after an Amazon is accused of mass murder. It falls to Wonder Woman to find the culprit as she becomes “finds herself an outlaw in the world she once swore to protect.”

Meanwhile, The Flash (which focuses on Wally West) will also relaunch in September, with the new team of Si Spurrier (Legion of X) and Mike Deodato Jr. (The Resistance). The pair teased their story for Wally will be more focused on “cosmic horror” as he explores new realms and gets a handle on his new powers. Like with Wonder Woman, the relaunch will be preceded by The Flash #800 in June, which will be oversized and bring the current run by Jeremy Adams and Roger Cruz to a close.

It isn't different. The article's author said, "The Avengers are a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but they are a top movie franchise all on their own. In just four films, Tony Stark and the crew have hauled in an eye-popping $7.76 billion, making The Avengers the most successful franchise within the most successful franchise."

Brian Anderson was so impressed with the four Avengers' movies that he thought it necessary to exclude them from the rest of the MCU. That's a stupid take and I will not even frame it as an opinion. I am almost tempted to contact him and ask him: "Why do you lump the first Star Trilogy with the rest? The first three films were notably 'better' than the other seven movies. Why not use the same thought process on the Star Wars franchise as you did with the MCU franchise?"

EDIT: 'Better' in terms of impressive box office adjusted by inflation.

It's a combo phrase for the Harry Potter films and the Fantastic Beast films that followed (Harry and his friends are not featured in the prequels).

Tom Cruise Has Seen ‘The Flash’ … and He Loved It (Exclusive)

By Borys Kit | The Hollywood Reporter
March 17, 2023

<snip>

In late February, according to several sources, Cruise had a meeting with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, during which the mogul mentioned how great the movie was. Cruise, curiosity piqued, then asked to see it. Zaslav acquiesced to the request, and a copy of the movie was sent over to Cruise.

But, as an insider says, this was no casual messengering. A Warners employee brought the movie to Cruise’s home in Beverly Hills and stayed until the actor finished watching The Flash. It is unclear on what format Cruise watched it, whether it was digital or film. When Cruise finished, the movie was given back to the messenger, who returned it to the studio.

Cruise was so taken by what he saw that soon after, he reached out to Muschietti. It was a call out of the blue for the director. Cruise is said to have raved about the movie, saying something to the effect that Flash is “everything you want in a movie” and “this is the kind of movie we need now,” according to insiders.

DC Comics Charging $4.99 For The Standard 22-Page Superman Comic?

By Rich Johnston | BleedingCool.com
March 18, 2023
The new Superman #1 for 2023 had a thirty-page comic book story and cost $4.99 or $5.99 for a cardstock cover. That's the standard price at DC Comics for an oversized comic book. However, Superman #2, out next week, is also $4.99 or $5.99, but for a 22-page story. And that seems to be the price going forward for the comic book at that size. Other DC Comics titles that size are still priced at $3.99; it looks as if Superman will be trialling a new price point, $5 for a standard-size comic book, going forward.

Let’s face it. Hollywood superhero movies have a quality problem

By Ryan Faughnder | Los Angeles Times
March 20, 2023

There are plenty of reasons why DC’s latest film offering, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” performed poorly, grossing just $30.5 million in the U.S. and Canada.

Reviews were brutal for the production with an estimated $125-million budget. And maybe there just wasn’t that much interest in a “Shazam!” sequel to begin with. The original “Shazam!” opened with a solid $53 million, but it wasn’t quite a runaway hit, ending up with $140 million domestically for a so-so 2.6x multiple from its debut.

It may have just been plain difficult to get DC fans to care.

“Shazam!,” starring Zachary Levi, was always a little outside the main DC galaxy, and the sequel was a holdover from the previous Warner Bros. regime and doesn’t play into the future of the franchise, making it a bit of a lame-duck casualty of a shift in strategy.

Shazam seem like a difficult sell to begin with ... i admit that even when it is free and availalble on HBO Max, i still have not seen it .

Probably because i take my Super hero genre so seriously ... although if it is done brilliantly such as Thor Ragnorok, a splendid well placed, well directed blend of super hero action and comedy, it can work it's magic.

" Love and Thunder " just flat went stupidly overboard with the comedy. And there was not anything superlative about the super hero action, I thought it ordinary.

I don't think Shazam hero was ever popular, but i assume that since a sequel was in the plans, the studio must've thought they received enuff fanfare to risk a sequel.
Boom ... flopped to the drop.

I am not totally with you on Thor: Ragnarok but otherwise pretty much agree. I think the Shazam! movies were projected as the DCU comedic drama type version of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Then again, DC has stubbornly kept Billy Batson's character alive through forced relevance for decades in all media. I could be completely off the mark but I have always wondered if they wanted to keep him around as a less-Superman like crutch. Someone who WAS Superman but not Superman at the same time.

In my opinion, they could have ditched Shazam altogether long ago and poured all creativity and resources into Supergirl instead. I mean, that is who Kara really is, namely, Superman but NOT Superman.

One thing is certain in my case. I will not wait three years to see the sequel like I did with the original movie. Now if I can just get the urge to do so. :D

Milestone's Blood Syndicate are Building Their Own Version of The X-Men's Krakoa

By John Dodge | CBR
March 23, 2023

milestone-s-blood-syndicate-are-building-their-own-version-of-the-x-men-s-krakoa.jpg

The Milestone Universe has always been home to some of the most intriguing heroes and villains in pop culture. This makes it all the more surprising that those who are arguably the most important of them all have consistently been overshadowed by their peers. Thankfully, Milestone's other original Bang Babies are well on their way toward the kind of comeback that will be unforgettable no matter what happens next. Especially now that they have an island home to call their own.

"Blood Syndicate: Epilogue" (by Geoffrey Thorne, Sean Damien Hill, Anthoney Fowler Jr., Juan Castro, Wil Quintana, and Andworld Design) from the pages of the Milestone 30th Anniversary Special finds the eponymous heroes cleaning up the last of the villains who call Paris Island home. After already defeating the murderous Holocaust, it is only a matter of time until the remnants of his army are dealt with, though that is only the beginning of what the Blood Syndicate has planned. Not only have they freed Paris Island from Holocaust's grip, but they have also freed it from Dakota City entirely. The Blood Syndicate's next steps are leading it into a bright albeit uncertain future that is quite similar to Marvel's current X-Men stories.

This turn puts the Blood Syndicate into a whole new territory as far as its legacy is concerned. The original team, which debuted in 1993's Blood Syndicate #1 (by co-creators Dwayne McDuffie and Ivan Velez Jr. and artist Trevor von Eden), was a brutal menagerie of former gang members who came together in the wake of the Big Bang to protect Paris Island. Although the team led some of the most explosive campaigns in the Milestone Universe and consisted of stellar characters such as Tech-9 and Fade, Blood Syndicate couldn't help but be outshone by contemporaries.

As time went on, Virgil Hawkins became a household name thanks to the 2000s animated series Static Shock. Even Curtis Metcalf, aka Hardware, was given a chance to shine on the silver screen thanks to a role in the much more recent Young Justice. There is certainly something to be said for these two characters translating far more easily into family-friendly media than the Blood Syndicate. The latter, on the other hand, has somehow flown under the radar throughout each iteration of their career up until now. As the new Paris Island is on the verge of becoming a safe haven for Bang Babies, the Blood Syndicate is effectively creating the Milestone Universe's very own nation of Krakoa.

i think i would have tried a DC series on Super Girl .. or a guest appearance her in a Superman Legacy, before doing the Super Girl solo.
I mean she just had a WB series which may have been " meh " to many superhero genre fans.

Did Kara Zor-El really move the needle among general public on the WB, that fan demand is such that she is ready for the big league solo flick ?

i agree that Shazam was probably a dart throw in the dark hope it'd be similar to Guardians of the Galaxy. action/comedy blend.
Only Marvel fan base is so massive enuff to gamble upon GOG, ..as opposed to Shazam.

Would have it been better planned if Shazam waited to show in the DC series, than he's own solo movie ?
