Should the NFL stop marijuana testing?

If the nfl is involved in any anti drug promotions, I would say no. They do a lot of promotions in schools and stuff. I don't personally care outside of it would seem hypocritical policy wise

But it is still illegal in some states.

Anyway, I don't know. I used to think that making drug use legal would end all the drug wars and violence. Now I see what is happening in those west coast cities on the news with all the homeless drug addicts. That is no way to live and as a good people we should not allow our fellow human beings to live in such suffering. It is not the "Christian thing" to do. Our society needs to move away from the legalization of drugs. And NFL players should not be promoting drug use!

Just my opinion.

Legalizing weed did not create homeless drug addicts.

Actually, most, if not all schools, high schools, and colleges have anti-drug promotions but they don't test their staff/employees for drugs.

I used to think this too, but it was brought to my attention that the NFL never tested for weed for legal reasons. It was never the NFL’s responsibility to make sure players are following certain laws; they don’t keep track of license plate stickers or investigate tax fraud or monitor the purchase of Chinese knockoff products.

The testing and punishment of marijuana is specifically for performance benefit concerns, and that is an outdated setup from the 70s and 80s. They don’t even test for it during the season anymore. Compare it to Ayahuasca. Ayahuasca is illegal in the USA, but Aaron Rodgers will never fail a drug test over it because the nfl doesn’t perceive it as a performance enhancing drug.

Just because states legalized pot doesn't mean the NFL can't test for it and suspend players testing positive for it.
I would prefer the NFL test and enforce testing positive.

Weed is a really good relaxer for physically demanding jobs including sports. I think the NFL, sports and society are control freaks when it comes to weed because they fail to acknowledge the benefits, but rather push harmful pills (see Brett Favre).

There are a scant few jobs that do random drug tests unless you're driving their vehicles or operating machinery. The NFL has no need to routinely test for recreational drugs. However, if someone makes a public spectacle with drugs, or is arrested on drug charges, then the league can act on the basis of actions detrimental to the league. But there's no reason to be turning over any rocks that don't need turning over.

Look at what it did to John Mayer!

I've got a couple of friends who went through the same thing. They thought legalizing it would be harmless, but the repercussions were much worse than they had thought.

Drug use isn’t legal in California. Maybe you need to understand the specifics before pontificating.

No, I understand it’s not legal to smoke weed in some states, but it’s not the NFL’s responsibility to enforce federal or state laws. The specific reason they do drug tests is for fair play, which is in question as to whether it actually gives anyone an upper hand there.
