Davis I see it. Carter will be tough because he does the opposite of Maz
Davis and Carter can battle it out to see who can get the most out of shape and gas the earliest in a game. It should be a good battle.

Oh 100%.

The best thing for Carter was he has all of his Georgia guys. Word is Jordan Davis was the one who kept him in check at Georgia.
Yeah, but now you add millions of dollars to the mix. When you give people with no work ethic that type of money, their lazy nature usually wins out in short order.

Philly has a winning culture and expectations are high.

He’ll be fine there I would think.

all that hoopla last year of Philly taking Davis at 13, then folks poo Mazi at 26 because he's a two down player. Davis had 8 tackles and 0 sacks in 13 games last year. Kinda screams 2 down player 13 spots higher than our 2 down player.

They have a lot of vets there. Graham, Cox etc. I think he will do fine there

I felt all along he looked like a 2nd round prospect. The lack of athleticism was a major red flag.

Glad to see he’s still available..

The cherry on top would be if the NFL take Laporta over him who probably has more upside.

So glad we passed on him. Even for a 2 down run stuffer that was a waste of a 1st rounder.
So is Washington and Musgrave, two guys you would have been perfectly fine taking at 26. TEs aren't typically valued in first round unless they are freaks of nature. Was why I was totally against a TE at 26.

LaPorta

6’-3”
245 lbs
4.59 forty
1.59 10-yard split
35” vertical
6.91 3-cone

They aren’t looking for a Witten/Schultz tight end. They have that already in Ferguson. They want a receiving weapon.
Here's the problem and it's something some of the scouts have pointed out. When you watch LaPorta play, he doesn't play like a guy with those measurables. He plays slower than he was tested. Mayer is limited athletically for sure but when you pop in tapes of the two and watch, they both look to be playing the same speed.

LaPorta at 26 would have been idiotic. 58? Now that makes more sense and a worthwhile pick. Come back with an interior OL in the 3rd and a TB in the 4th (or vice versa) and let's roll.

i still think mayer is the best te in the group.
but i am surprised he didn't go rd1.
i'm more surprised...happily...that we just drafted a dt in rd1.
love these drafts under mccarthy.

LOL…we don’t have much company in this take but looks like teams saw him the same way.

Which was the whole point of not taking a bad value like Mayer in round 1.

I said he was a round 2 player getting overrated and the NFL agreed with me.

Now it’s time to deal with it.

I love that the Cowboys supposedly like Laporta more who I’ve been saying is close with Mayer if not better.

Imagine wanting a slow 1990s TE in 2023.

Heck ESPN was calling him a 1980s TE lol.

What's interesting is that the Cowboys love to take their risks in the 2nd round - Gregory and his pot problem, Joseph and his off the field issues, Smith and his busted knee - because they were viewed as high ceiling guys.

There is a guy out there that screams high ceiling that would be a total risk in the 2nd. Musgrave. Limited production, athletic, has some flaws, dealt with injuries. Fits right into that Cowboys mold of taking your big risk in the 2nd.

LOL. Did Mayer steal your lunch money or something?

The LaPorta thing is puzzling to me. Because if you are concerned Mayer plays slow, then that should be a concern with LaPorta. Watch him and Mayer. The same. Watch LaPorta and Kincaid. It's night and day different despite both having similar testing numbers. Washington is another that many here said was worthy of 26 and he's still sitting at home too.

That being said, at 58, I'd be fine with any of the remaining TEs.

Cowboys may have Laporta ranked ahead of Mayer. Broaddus kinda said something along those lines.

It doesn’t surprise at all either.
They could have Musgrave over him too.

If you told me a team had a TE board something like this, I would not be surprised at all.
  1. Kincaid
  2. Washington
  3. Laporta
  4. Musgrave
  5. Kuntz
  6. Mayer
Mayer doesn't have any special traits, theres nothing to distinguish him from the Dalton Schultzes of the world, so there's no reason to take him early.

Work ethic is the difference IMO
Just asking but am I wrong in saying one if the knocks on Mazi was effort? A lot of reports have mentioned it. Where I think that gets fixed, if true, is Quinn

I don’t get the Mayer hate. Seems like prototype TE who can block and catch and just solid stud.

He has been touted for a few years now. He’s not the flavor of the week and people are finding reasons to not like him.

People say “effort” but confuse that with stats. He was a 2 gapping NT playing in a 4 point stance he won’t rack up stats

The guy played 49 snaps a game against the best offenses for a great run defense for a no nonsense hard nosed coach like Harbaugh

I doubt effort is his issue

He’s just a mediocre athlete compared to the top TEs in football. Doesn’t have the traits to be that guy.

I like him just a better 2nd round target than 1st round target IMO.
