This interview took place right after the Fehoko pick. New Assistant DL Coach Sharrif Floyd does something here at the 10:50 mark of the video that I've never heard a coach do before. He admits the guy he got wasn't the guy he really wanted and even named his preference. Which was Oklahoma St. DE Tyler Lacy, that they also viewed as a 3 tech like Fehoko.

Lacy was selected by the Jaguars with the very next pick.

Just something to file away in your memory bank.

Floyd is basically a quality control coach, so I doubt he would have much imput anyways

Put it in memory so if it works out it'll never be mentioned again and if it fails it'll be brought up nonstop. We know the drill

He didn't say he preferred Lacy. He was asked if there are any other DL he had his eye on. He said Lacy was already taken (right after Fehoko) He said that the other guys that went before Lacy did so because they had some pass rush technique and Lacy needs to be coached up (a lot more) in technique. Then admitted that he's hunting for a 3T.

He said Lacy was his guy but understood why they took Fehoko.

You guys have an amazing ability to create your own reality and then live in it.

Smith is a 1 tech. Lacy is a 3 tech.

I heard that in real time, and again now, and had the same take each time….he would have preferred Lacy but they had Fehoko much higher, and he will play the same 3t spot that Lacy would have.

Personally I don’t want position coaches having any pull at all on draft picks after what went on during the Garrett years.

That sounded like a novice coach getting a little too honest about not getting ‘his guy’.

And you can tell the media people loved it, as he actually gave them some inside news instead of the usual company line.

i am actually happy they didnt overrule the scouts over a new assistant coach.
As much as I like and trust Quinn, and am damn happy to still have him, I’m not sure I want him influencing draft picks after the Nashon Wright total throwaway in the 3rd per his advice.

People go nuts over comp picks, and the one time we lost a player that returned one of significance, that’s who we took.

Remember Rod picking Taco and Trystan? I trust the scouts.

Exactly my thinking. He won't do that again.

He was answering the question of guys left after the Fehoko pick. You are hearing what you want and not what he said.
No he wasn't. It is you that are hearing what you want to hear.

He wanted a 3 tech. Lacy was his guy. Oh well he's gone now anyway. Thats what he said.

They weren't going to draft two 3 techs.

He definitely has too much influence but that's what happens when your top two personnel guys are frauds. They rely entirely on their support staff.

That’s a very interesting take.

If you were wrong as often as some around here accuse you of, I may even dispute that, but I’ll settle for being all that more discouraged.

But I’m still drinking the Jerry Kool Aid because I have no choice. I liked winning too much and I want it back, even if I’m the fool. That’s why I hate the dude. Can’t really help any of it.

I don't get this. They picked him at 99, not 65.

The hit rate for corners - or really any position - at that point is pretty low. The comp picks that year were:

96. Ronnie Perkins, DE
97. Tre' McKitty, TE
98. Quinn Meinerz, C
99. Nashon Wright, CB
100. Elijah Molden, CB
101. Ife Melifonwu, CB

Meinerz is the only hit there, to this point, and it's not like he's an All Pro.
