Separating Fact From Fiction Over How the NFL Salary Cap Works

Andrew Brandt puts on his professor hat to clear up some myths about cash vs. cap, stars taking less money to help the team and more.
Myth No. 2: Elite players should take less to “help the team win”

No.

Less cap? Sure. Less cash? No.

If top players, especially quarterbacks, want to facilitate the signing of other important players on the team—we can debate whether that is their role, but even if we allow for it—there is a way they can easily do that, and hundreds of players have. They can simply do a cap restructure of their contracts: converting their large salaries into signing bonuses, thereby pushing out cap charges into the future years through proration. These are cap restructures done by every team in the NFL. The player receives the exact same money he was scheduled to receive, sometimes even with better cash flow and an earlier payment schedule.

Dak is NOT Elite therefore the above subject does not pertain to him!!!!

BS. Pats always signed a plethora of D players every year w/ the money they saved from Brady, not to mention some OL's. Think before you speak.

The second reason Brady has taken less money over the years is the more plausible one. The money the Patriots are saving in not making Brady the highest-paid quarterback is being used to pay for offensive weapons to help Brady as he ages. At least that’s what they are selling him. Except, they aren’t. And this is why I think Brady might think about leaving if he’s asked to take less than he believes is his market value.

The Patriots hardly have any offensive playmakers. Their offensive line has gotten worse. The money that’s supposed to be spent is not being spent. Draft picks being used on offense aren’t panning out. After losing Rob Gronkowski, Brady’s most reliable weapon, the Patriots did nothing to replace him.

Yes it is. You're missing the fact that there is a salary minimum. The money is being spent.

Brady won that many super bowls in large part due to D. That's where the money is being spent. As well as a deep and talented OLine when Brady was here.

Yes, it is now falling apart. Happens to every team.

so last year the cowboys had 20M in cap space left at the end of the year. they could have signed a player and paid him 20M. they didn't. where did that money go?
No sure where you are getting this information from but it is bogus. They ended the year with 5 million in cap space and that money will roll over into this years cap. The idea that the Cowboys would ever not spend the full cap and pocket the money is asinine. If there was no salary cap we would spend more money than anybody.

You're crazy if you truly believe you can field a playoff talented team and keep it intact if you're willing to pay your QB up to 25% of your team's salary cap. There is no way you will be able to maintain a playoff capable team, much less be talented enough to reach a championship game, if you agree to pay that much to any QB.
Preach!

Brady wouldn't have as many rings as he does if he maxxed out his contract demands, and no, teams can't just gimmick contracts like that away or else people like Brady wouldn't be willing to take a more team friendly deal.
There is a right way and a wrong way to do things. Sometimes less is more in the long run. If Brady would have demanded top dollar and not win as many titles would he have played for so long? Nope
