He’s never been a separation guy…he makes great catches but it’s because he doesn’t get open a lot. I like him, but you can’t expect him to be a great #2, injury or not, defenses will never have to account for him with more than one defender. He can be a phenom #3 but you need two guys ahead of him who can consistently get separation and frustrate defenses if we are going to be a legit contender.
He gets separation against single coverage better than people give him credit for.

Typical handling of injuries and position depth by this FO, trade Cooper, rush Gallup back, and have little to no depth in the WR room. Hilton should have been signed earlier, Gallup should have started the season on PUP.

I seem to remember him getting separation fine until last year.

They handled it poorly but Lamb, Brown, Tolbert and Gallup should’ve been enough. It wasn’t.

The Dallas Cowboys made a handful of pivotal moves on offense last offseason. Those decisions included trading veteran wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns and re-signing wide receiver Michael Gallup to a five-year, $57.5 million deal despite him suffering a torn ACL near the end of the 2021 NFL season.

Gallup's recovery forced him to miss the first three games of 2022, and he never seemed to get in a groove thereafter. Has he finally turned a corner? The early signs are good.

"Just for him to get into this offseason, get his body right, and now just starting to come back into who Michael Gallup is and feel himself, I think what you just saw is a couple of plays right there of doing that consecutively," Prescott said. "But that's a guy that I've got a lot of trust in. I know who he is, and more importantly, how he works and comes to work each and every day to get better. He's getting his feet under him, and he's going to be better."

We signed a player to 2 guaranteed years, the first of which he was unhealthy from a pre-exisiting injury.

Clown Team.
Across the 14 games that he appeared in last season, Gallup totaled just 39 receptions for 424 yards (a career-low 10.9 yards per reception) and four touchdowns. Gallup has spent his entire five-year NFL career in Dallas. His most productive season came in 2019, when Gallup totaled 1,107 receiving yards on 16.8 yards per reception.

Since trading Cooper, the Cowboys have seen CeeDee Lamb become their undisputed No. 1 receiver and a Pro-Bowler in each of the last two seasons. This offseason, Dallas lost its No. 2 and 3 pass-catchers from last season — tight end Dalton Schultz and wide receiver Noah Brown — but also acquired veteran receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans, who the outgoing Cowboys ironically signed with.

You mean the year coming off a ACL and was rush back to soon and clearly wasn't ready to play yet?
So we can agree that the front staff was completely inept in their decision making process, why give him a high market contract and then get rid of your former number 1?

I won't ever understand why the Cowboys thought Gallup was ready to go last season. Clearly there was a breakdown in communication between the doctors and the staff. Or else the staff just had blinders on. Makes no sense.

The Cowboy did not give Gallup a high market contract. 5 years for $57M isn't high value WR money.

good to know we threw a season away with our #2 receiver unable to actually play effectively, after we traded our #1 receiver for almost nothing

Just no. He was never a number 2 and when asked he failed miserably. His catch to target rate I believe is 55% which is rather low. He's a number 3 at best and he should do well being the no 3 receiver again. He can't handle no 2 roll, he was the 3RD worst separator in the league last year.
You can either separate or catch congested balls.

Or both.

Honestly, even two years ago I was really concerned about how fans here in the Zone were talking about Gallup being a #1. Hell, there were many posters who considers him “untouchable”.

This is why if we’re serious, we need Hopkins.

Gallup is a #3 and always will be. And if we can get a legit #2, we can, and should, push him down a spot.

A healthy Gallup is one of the best #2 receivers in football

and the tough/miracle sideline catches are his staple
There are ten or fifteen teams who wouldn’t even consider Gallup as replacing their current #2.

We should be realistic about the perception we had before the injury.

We put so much, even at the time, on his potential and what his best case was. He’s two years removed from a “potential breakthrough” and had a serious injury.

He’s a team guy and I don’t want to ditch him, but the cowboys need to be in Win Now mode and banking on Gallup is really risky

Yeah the national media is pumping the Ravens offense up with OBJ, Flowers, and Bateman. I think our trio is miles better and Dak is a better passer then Lamar.
Who cares what the media says about Baltimore.

What does that have to do with us beating the Eagles and Niners?

Problem is our genius FO banked on him being 100 percent last year. Our FO is delusional when it comes to their own players sometimes.
And so is our fan base. We shouldn’t get a pass. We hyped this guy into the stratosphere
