Michael Gallup is "getting his feet under him"

He’s never been a separation guy…he makes great catches but it’s because he doesn’t get open a lot. I like him, but you can’t expect him to be a great #2, injury or not, defenses will never have to account for him with more than one defender. He can be a phenom #3 but you need two guys ahead of him who can consistently get separation and frustrate defenses if we are going to be a legit contender.

He gets separation against single coverage better than people give him credit for.

Yeah I don’t remember separation being an issue for him. Anquan Boldin didn’t get separation….Gallup can and has.

Across the 14 games that he appeared in last season, Gallup totaled just 39 receptions for 424 yards (a career-low 10.9 yards per reception) and four touchdowns. Gallup has spent his entire five-year NFL career in Dallas. His most productive season came in 2019, when Gallup totaled 1,107 receiving yards on 16.8 yards per reception.

Since trading Cooper, the Cowboys have seen CeeDee Lamb become their undisputed No. 1 receiver and a Pro-Bowler in each of the last two seasons. This offseason, Dallas lost its No. 2 and 3 pass-catchers from last season — tight end Dalton Schultz and wide receiver Noah Brown — but also acquired veteran receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans, who the outgoing Cowboys ironically signed with.

So we can agree that the front staff was completely inept in their decision making process, why give him a high market contract and then get rid of your former number 1?

I won't ever understand why the Cowboys thought Gallup was ready to go last season. Clearly there was a breakdown in communication between the doctors and the staff. Or else the staff just had blinders on. Makes no sense.

The Cowboy did not give Gallup a high market contract. 5 years for $57M isn't high value WR money.

Just no. He was never a number 2 and when asked he failed miserably. His catch to target rate I believe is 55% which is rather low. He's a number 3 at best and he should do well being the no 3 receiver again. He can't handle no 2 roll, he was the 3RD worst separator in the league last year.

You can either separate or catch congested balls.

Or both.

Honestly, even two years ago I was really concerned about how fans here in the Zone were talking about Gallup being a #1. Hell, there were many posters who considers him “untouchable”.

This is why if we’re serious, we need Hopkins.

Gallup is a #3 and always will be. And if we can get a legit #2, we can, and should, push him down a spot.

We should be realistic about the perception we had before the injury.

We put so much, even at the time, on his potential and what his best case was. He’s two years removed from a “potential breakthrough” and had a serious injury.

He’s a team guy and I don’t want to ditch him, but the cowboys need to be in Win Now mode and banking on Gallup is really risky
