If Tolbert plays well, is Gallup gone?

Is there any chance you all can see this being Gallups final season as a cowboy, if Tolbert is able to take his camp progress into the season? Financially is this what the cowboys want to happen

Sure. It would be nice to get the WR cap hit down as Lamb's new contract looms.

If Tolbert starts stepping up into the top 3, as we drafted him to, moving on from Gallup is a good idea. They're the same type of player. One would basically become the 4th behind whatever fast guy we get to replace the Cooks role in our top 3.

But Gallup's contract is back weighted, so we have the option to keep him for 2024 and beyond if Gallup's play keeps justifying those dollars. Yet if that is the case, the best option may still be to trade Gallup if Tolbert steps up.

Cooks is on a relatively cheap two-year deal ($6 million this year, $10 million next) after he restructured. I don't see any reason to release him after this year. Gallup costs $6.7 million this year and $13.8 next year. However, I can't see us dumping Gallup next year because it costs almost as much to cut him as it does to keep him (although we can spread it over two years).

The cap hit to cut Cooks would be $6 million (saving $4 million against the cap) so it does make more sense in that regard, but I think it depends on his play. If he's a top-notch No. 2 receiver, $10 million isn't a lot to pay for that.

Cooks will likely be here at least two seasons, unless he flops or has injury problems. He’s spent at least two seasons with every team he’s been with.

I don't get the idea that because one guys shines another guy has to get cut or traded. If Tolbert plays well then that's a plus for the team. Having 4 quality WRs is better than 3 still, isn't it?

The Gallup watch should start in 2025 when his salary goes up to $10.5 million is he doesn't play well in 2024.

He was recovering from a major injury last season. He'll be much improved this season.

Not after you see Gallups production this year. It was going to take him a whole season to get physically and mentally ready and trust the leg. He should be back to what they paid him for.

After this year his guaranteed money will be paid but is a 13 million dollar cap hit if cut. Will make 11 million this year and he knows he is on the bubble. If he is a bust this year he will be on another team making nothing. It’s up to Dak to throw it to him but he needs to be open. I see some tow tap sideline catches coming.

The structure of deals is so important
Many times fans just assume cutting a guy saves money when many times that’s not the case. Before talking about cutting a guy you have to look at his contract for sure

This what I was going to say too. But I think the question is moot, Gallup should be fine now, he's had time to overcome the mental aspect of knee injury.
