Rex Ryan has reportedly re-entered the conversation with Jerry Jones and Mike McCarthy

Jerry vs Stephen ?
A typical Zimmer experience:
1) First-year Zimmer defenses have a steep learning curve.
2) They're often playoff-caliber by the end of their 1st regular season.
3) By mid-Season 2, they arrive among the NFL's elite.
4) This timeline is far ahead of a typical Rivera-coached unit.

I didn't bother to make this chart nice, so I'll just lead with how I interpret it: Further right = Better underlying pass defense results against the Shanahan tree of playcallers since 2017 Further up = Better results against all other offenses (over a much > sample)

Here's the "peak" Zimmer defensive era in Minnesota. Four straight seasons where they never once fell out of the top quartile in underlying strength against the pass. And over a separate five-season span in Cincinnati (2009-2013), Zimmer's results were arguably even better.

This translates to me as ; Zimmer wants certain things in his contract that Dallas won’t guarantee or include and to leverage the situation they are using Ryan’s interest to get Zimmer to acquiesce

It will be Zimmer in the end is my call
Precisely

I swear this franchise is crazy.
Yep.

And there is really no scenario where this process results in a high level of success, where we hire a retread, apparently can't close the deal, in the meantime another retread who has been sitting behind a desk for 8 years expresses interest and impresses Jerry and Mike and they open it up to the possibility of us hiring himself instead.

My guess is this will kick Zimmer in the bud to acquiesce to Jerry’s contract language, but admittingly Ryan is the most dangerous hire you could make.

Maybe he flames out, or maybe he returns to humiliating opposing offenses. Zimmer and Rivera’s highest highs are not close to Ryan’s

Drama! lol.

Guess Zimmer was asking for too much $ or security. I have to assume rex won't be cheap certainly not cheaper than what he's making now.

Rex hasn't coached since 2016 and hasn't been a DC since 2008? Why even consider this? Not like Zimmer is much better. He's just like McCarthy was when they hired him. Sitting in a cabin watching film for several years.

Rex apparently respects Mike for him to call him first. I think this has a great chance of being a perfect fit if it happens.

If he is hired the next talk will be should Rex be the HC? This hire would be nothing but more distractions, exactly what most people on this board says there is too much of. I don't get it. He is clearly not what is needed NOW!

They need to pick somebody ASAP.

The preparation for the draft should be well underway and the Cowboys need to identify prospects that will fit what they want on defense. The sooner they get a DC here the better.
You asking too much.
