They are rolling over as much of the cap as they can to mitigate the 80 million in dead money in 2025. That is all this is. Dak will get extended. So will Lamb. They will just be playing on an inferior team to the one that wasn't good enough last time around. With little depth and the hope that the don't suffer any injuries and every bounce goes our way. So "yay" us.

I suspect that Stephen thinks he's playing hardball by making Dak wait, but I also suspect that's wishful thinking on his part. Dak and his agent both know that he holds the ace-in-the-hole when negotiations come around. It does little to quiet the fans that aren't especially giddy with the situation, as it now stands. On top of that, the chances of having a season good enough to warrant a playoff run isn't in the cards, either. Stephen could be hoping that Dak will change his mind about seeking a major reward when all is said and done. But, that's surely wishful thinking, also.

I don’t think the Jones boys are playing hardball with Dak. I think they are seriously contemplating moving on from Dak, and may have already decided that.

Anything's possible, but I'll have to see it to believe it. My take is that Dak knows he has a treasure awaiting him and is 100% willing to wait. Stephen and Jerry aren't about to piss away their chances of winning just enough to keep the millions of $$$ coming in. I'm guessing I could be wrong, but I'm also hoping you're right. ;)

If they get a new QB and he loses games, it's not like the fans will go anywhere. the stadium will be filled with fans or haters. Jerry can't lose. It's so simple a caveman can see it.

We can hope he holds out.
If he holds out he’ll still owe the Cowboys a year of service. There is no upside for Dak to hold out. His best negotiating position is to be a free agent and be available to all 32 teams and any can sign him without compensation to the Cowboys. He gets to that moment fastest by playing the 2024 season for Dallas. The only way he signs with Dallas is if the Cowboys offer him a deal as great or greater than what his agent believes he can get if he were a free agent. Dak’s agent works for the same agency as Justin Jefferson’s agent. These guys are not just goofing around.

Until training camp??????? Is this true?? Why wait? I mean, what's the point ........this far past free agency and the draft? If this is true, they may as well give France a blank check coz the only leverage left will be if injury costs Dak to miss most of the season.

It appears from their perspective, that the extra cap from his extension has little or nothing to do with free agency per se but more about Lamb and Parsons deals.

Cowboys roster: How the starters would line up for a game right now

This is what the Dallas Cowboys roster would look like if they had to play a game today

Quarterback - Dak Prescott. It’s a given. The management (read: Stephen Jones) is indicating they will probably not work on an extension with him until training camp, but he is the starter no matter how that goes. He is a very good if not elite quarterback. His success and the success of the team is going to depend a lot on how well Mike McCarthy runs his offense this year.
He is not the starter if he holds out. Which he’s going to do.

If you're going to wait until TC, then you should wait until the season's over. Let's see how he does under a 60mil cap hit .. because that will be what the future holds

Crazy that this FO is blaming Dak for a situation that is entirely their responsibility for creating lol…

It wouldn’t surprise me either way but losing the way we did REALLY hurt Jerry this time. They may not move on from Dak but I really believe they are considering the possibilities.

I don’t think the Cowboys will give Dak a record contract. I might be proven wrong, but I think Jerry and co are really digging in this time.

Good. for the hundredth time, It’s dumb to extend Dak now. We don’t need the cap space so why do it? We need some of that dead cap off the books. It will help us whether we sign/extend him next year or not. there is no benefit to extending him this year at this point. We can clear as much cap space as we need to with other players and no, he doesn’t have all the leverage and we prove that by not even approaching him This year.

Likely trying to scare Dak and his agent.
Scare him of what? Giving him everything he wants or he goes the FA route. Dak holds all the cards and Jerry doesn’t have the balls to push back. Dak sucks but Jerry will pay him top QB money then try and save face by saying what a bargain he got, meanwhile the team will keep failing and next year it will be about giving Dak what he needs to win, it’s the same story , Jerry is brilliant he can’t help that others keep failing. Dak is a good example of how to destroy a team by over paying mediocre talent because he’s your guy. Stats Dakchoka the homers love him to put up those numbers against the dregs and will continue to make the excuses yearly for his meltdown. Here we go, another season of failure but Dak doesn’t care he has the bag.
