Danny White led the Cowboys to 3 straight NFC Championship games in the early 80's and is one of our most underappreciated and misunderstood QBs in our history.

Here is an interesting article about Danny White (source: sportscasting.com)

"Danny White took over in 1980 and exceeded expectations. White had started just one game in four years in Dallas and had attempted just 103 passes. Nobody knew quite what to expect but White was fantastic. Starting all 16 games, he led the Cowboys to a 12-4 record, throwing for 3,287 yards and 28 touchdowns, all while still maintaining his role as the punter."

"In his career, Danny White threw for 21,959 yards. Roger Staubach threw for 22,700. White threw for 155 touchdowns for the Cowboys. Staubach threw for 153. With four more years than White as a starter, Troy Aikman threw 164. White had a winning percentage of .674 as a starter. Aikman’s was .569. Even take away that dreadful first year for Aikman when the Cowboys were 1-15 (Aikman was 0-11 as a starter) and his winning percentage is still lower at .610."

What do you think about Danny White's time as our QB? If you're not old enough to have seen him play, then you've likely heard a lot of disparaging remarks about White and they would be wrong.
Danny was awesome.

Exactly and that game remains the worst Cowboys game I have ever watched. It is still painful to see that game.
I must be a glutton for punishment since I have rewatched that game several times. Stupid me sees Wright getting his finger on Prescott and every time I yell, "You can't stop Drew!" Then he does. Every time. :(

The November 1985 Bears game is the one Cowboys' game I have never re-watched and rarely have even looked at clips from it. Just thinking about it makes me re-feel that numbness inside just like if the game was played yesterday.

The timing of these Romo and Danny White appreciation threads is pretty amusing because it’s just another attempt to knock the QB we have. Neither one of those other QBs won a SB and both had their issues in the playoffs. White was lucky he inherited a terrific team or he would have never reached a conference title game. Both Romo and Dak were better QBs. I just wish they had the teams that White had. Randy White, Tony Dorsett and Drew Pearson were all under 30 when Danny White took over at QB.

Danny was the QB when I first started following Dallas in the 80s so I have a strong affiliation to him and other players in those years. I remember tuning in to the AFN on my big stereo on Sunday night and feeling tired Monday morning when I woke up for school. The AFN and Channel 4 in England were the only ways of catching up on the NFL until a newspaper called First Down was available.

That Bears game (85 Bears) was brutal but then again every offense facing the 85 bears had no luck. That Bears defense is the best in my lifetime and I'm 61!

I started this thread because people call Romo "Danny White 2.0" and White was a better QB IMO.

Quincy Carter was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft and named the starting quarterback for the Cowboys in 2001, becoming the first rookie quarterback to start for the team since Troy Aikman in 1989.

Led the Cowboys to a 5-1 record in his first six starts, including a 9-7 victory over the Washington Football Team and threw for a career-high 349 yards and 4 touchdowns in a game against the San Francisco 49ers in 2003.

Finished his career with the Cowboys with 3,302 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions. Helped the Cowboys reach the playoffs in 2003, where they lost to the Carolina Panthers in the Wild Card round.

We speak your name Quincy!

White had untimely turnovers issues like Romo but Romo was a much better QB. Danny White was helped by having some great teams along with a Hall of Fame WR and RB. This is why he won 5 playoff games and reached 3 straight conference title games. Good chance both Romo and Dak win championships with those teams.

Waiting for the Chad Hutchinson Appreciation post next. Also can’t wait for a thread about how much Vinny Testaverde used to squat.

I liked Quincy. He had moments of brilliance, but he never could take that next step. Just way too inconsistent, and threw some of the ugliest completions I believe I've ever seen. The guys that followed him up were awful. Hutch, Stoerner, Wright, Henson, etc were some of the worst QBs to start NFL games. Not sure what spurred the MLB to Cowboys starting QB movement but I hope we never see it again.

lol. Now this is funny. Never saw a QB throw a better non-spiral than Quincy Carter. His passes looked like an inaccurate field goal kick.

This is what scares me about Jerry choosing our next QB. I remember him gushing like a little kid when we drafted Carter. He thought he had his next Michael Vick when the only thing Vick and Carter would eventually have in common is "doing time".
