Oh trust me it is new. In a follow-up tweet, Rapoport said all signs point to Dak hitting free agency next year.

That means, no contract extension during camp like many of the homers were hoping for.

We cant tag him so they are for sure ok with the prospect of him leaving after this season
This is the only thing that makes sense in terms of what the hell we are doing this offseason. If they are just going with a soft reset here, let Dak and McCarthy play out one more year, then I can kind of understand what they are doing here.

But if Dak ends up getting an extension in July or August, LOL, then it's back to these guys are dumber than dirt talk.

If he gets an extension period after this offseason then they still really make no sense

I would add that the only negative is that Dak should just be traded. Take a bit more of a cap hit this year, but get a pick. And give Lance a chance this season.

Otherwise, this is the second best option.
Agree 100%.

1) there’s already been a follow up report from other cowboy reporters that a contract extension hasn’t been ruled out later in the offseason (gehlken)
they always say they “arent ruling out”. When is the last time they said this and they ended up bringing the player back?
2) as dumb as the cowboys are if they were seriously gonna let him walk they’d trade him for something than nothing.
no trade clause + they are giving him a one year prove it season.
3) if he leaves in free agency he still costs the cowboys $40million and he won’t even be on the team…you think Stephen and Jerry the cheapos they are paying that when he’s he’s complaining about zeke being paid $6 million for not being here.
Them not re-signing him and letting the season play out without the tag in their back pocket shows that they are really willing to eat that cap hit.

Unless they plan to get in a bidding war for him (they dont) him leaving is out of their control.

Dak is done here unless somehow Dak is willing to take a steep pay cut

Except the ones that have been calling it step by step.

Others would bite on every story about a Dak extension while ole Mountain was right there to let em know it wasn’t gonna happen every time.
Man can you honestly grow up? You are wrong on everything. You spew out 100 different pieces of crap just do you can hedge your bets and say you were right on something. You’re shooting 10 percent from the field. Doesn’t make you a shooter.

A no trade clause doesn’t mean he can’t be traded, it means he can dictate where he goes. If the cowboys publicly declare they are moving on from Prescott, his agent will also start looking for teams that daks interested in. All the no trade clause means is the cowboys lose control where he goes but he’s not gonna stay on a team when he’s told they wanna move on.

Them letting him play the season out without a new deal is jerry and Stephen’s way that they think they’ll regain leverage. They are essentially saying to dak “leave the cowboys then” because they have an arrogance that every player should want to be a cowboy even if the money is less. We’ve seen them lose this again and again with their “honest offers”. They don’t think he’ll walk away from Dallas.

Dak doesn’t need to prove anything to the cowboys. We can say move on from him, that’s fine but he’s going to get paid here or somewhere else, there’s literally nothing for him to prove. Even if he fails in the postseason again or doesn’t make them, some team will talk themselves into him rather easily. I really think you’re misreading the situation.

Again, at this point I’m fine with moving on from him but I’d bet the house it will not happen because of the cowboys decision.

Finally someone making sense. It’s like people don’t see the issue with keeping Dak this season….they are dragging their feet on a decision they should’ve made long before now.
What's the downside to letting him play out his contract? It's actually a pretty good way to play it.

The only real option is to cut him, but what does that get you? The cap hit is still there and spreading it out doesn't matter if your resigned to not competing for a SB next season, which certainly seems to be the case.

Trading him requires his approval, and who is going to give up much for a guy they know will be available next season?

I can make a case for just cutting him, but I can also make a case for letting him play the last year of his contract. It really doesn't make much difference.

Who are these veterans your going to trade for a haul to facilitate a rebuild? This isn't the horrible team that Walker played on. Not smart to trade your cornerstone players who are still on the front end of their careers. Who is worth much of anything after Parsons, Lamb and maybe Diggs? There goes most of your offense and most of your defense.

This team is in good shape to reset at QB, fill the roster through the draft and potentially be in a position to compete in 2 or 3 seasons.

And yes, I know the chances the Jones can actually make any of that happen is slim, but a well run organization could, and its a smart play.

A trade could easily happen I believe. IF Dak accepts it.

Teams would much rather negotiate a deal with a trade than wait a year and battle it out with other teams in free agency.

There’s always a sucker out there willing to be had.

How are some of you upset?
The owner is finally come to the realization the current QB is incapable of producing in the playoffs and is doing the only thing he can to move on.
I knew this was coming 10 months ago when we grabbed Lance . Either Lance showes something or we'll be drafting in the top 5 in 2025.
I actually applaud Jerry.
(that never happens )

A few here are bigger Dak fans than Cowboys fans.

It’s a small group, but they can be loud.

Just laugh em off.

The FO gave Dak every opportunity to succeed and Dak has blown it. They finally admitted he's not the guy anymore after the GB game. It is what it is. Smart move to not extend him in nearly every way except for fielding an improved 2024 team...a lot of fans won't be able to see the forest for the trees but it is obvious.
