I watched the TMZ episode with Stallone and Arnold, it was really good. They are my all time favorite actors, icons really. A question was posed to them….who is on the Mount Rushmore(four) of action stars. Without question, those two are in it. Arnold said Clint Eastwood is one and Sly said Bruce Willis is the other. It is hard to argue against those four.

But, it got me thinking……..IMO, Tom Cruise should be in the top four for action stars but who’s place does he take? I would say Clint since his action roles were limited, especially after the early 80’s.

It’s a dumb thought to ponder, I know but it was an interesting question.

How is "Action Star" defined? I'd argue that Bruce Lee, Sean Connery, and Milla Jovovich are all great action stars.

Ah good man!

Assassins doesn't get a lot of love but I always enjoyed him sparring with Banderas.

Rambo II rivals Rocky IV as far as my favorite to watch.

https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/a29702/action-hero-types/

The above article (from 2014) does not give a general definition of action star. Instead, the writer identifies the star by the type of character roles they played by decade:

  • 1970's - The Cool Loner (i.e. Clint Eastwood, Bruce Lee)
  • 1980's - The Bloodthirsty Freak (i.e. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren)
  • 1990's - The Eccentric Dude (i.e. Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Will Smith, Keanu Reeves, Nicholas Cage)
  • 2000's - The Lone Wolf (i.e. Jason Statham)
  • 2010's - The Pretty-Boy Heartthrob (i.e. Chris Pine, Channing Tatum, Liam Hemsworth)
The article indirectly mentioned my definition for 'action star', which is any actor or actresses who has played in a The Expendables film. :muttley:

It’s different for everyone but I go by a star who is the main character and can pull people to the box offices alone. It also has to be a shoot-em-up killing anything in the way. For me, that eliminates Milla and Bruce…. I would put up Jackie Chan and Chuck Norris above him. Connery is a different animal, I think he fits more into the drama category(aside from the Bond films).

Connery, Clint, John Wayne, Harrison Ford, Eddie Murphy and Denzel are all in one category to me whether it’s action or not. I have no problem if they are called action stars by others though. Mel Gibson is considered action from me but he doesn’t make my Mount Rushmore, close though.

Underrated guy who has been in quite a few movies and shows.

Karl Urban

Star Trek movies
The Boys series on prime
Red
Pathfinder
Lord of the Rings trilogy Eromer
The Chronicles of Riddick Vaako
Karl Urban might have recreated the best impersonation, Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy, of the entire new Star Trek movie cast. Maybe better than Zachary Quinto's Mr. Spock. I'm willing to bet DeForest Kelley would agree.
