Following up my Lion Template post from yesterday, this is how I would address the offensive offseason needs:

I would bank on changing the scheme over mass personnel changes. Also, feel that the unit is too young and needs veteran support:

Free Agents

-Signing one of these 3 receivers, hopefully to a 1yr deal: Diggs, Cooper, Diontae Johnson. Yes, they all have warts but would serve a legitimate, short-term #2 receivers.
-Sign a low-cost, veteran back. Davonte Williams, Foreman, Dillion types that won't cost too much and had a impact. Could also bring back Dowdle.
-Sign a low cost veteran with G/T starting experience. More of a swing tackle type for insurance if a younger prospect just isn't ready.
-Release Steele as a June 1st cut
-Do not resign Zach Martin

Adjustments to the OL

-Move Guyton to RT, Hoffman to C and Richards to LT. Beebe returns back to his natural RG position.
-Hire a modern, innovative OC with a strong OL coach.
-Change the run scheme from inside zone to outside zone like the Rams, 49ers, Dolphins use.

Draft

-Running Backs-high, electric type of speed, home run back. On day 3 add more of a traditional 3 day type to develop.
-If a good Z receiver is available, do not hesitate and allow him to develop behind the starters.
-If a quality offensive lineman falls into their lap, draft him.

A lot of good ideas but I don’t see these vets WRs moving the needle much. Apparently DJ is a head case, Jerry would never reunite with and Diggs is in the decline coming off an injury. Would much rather draft a young playmaker early or look for a trade for someone like Juedy.

Also not a fan of shuffling the OL. Guyton has made a lot of progress at LT and has a way higher ceiling than Richards and Beebe has looked rock solid at C. A lot of players / coaches talk about continuity on the OL and if they continue to show that progress just worry about the right side instead of blowing the whole thing up.

I would rather play the lineman at their natural positions. As for WR, we disagree, you would rather spend a high pick, I'm looking more for a veteran

Guyton played LT when he was younger…he played RT bc their QB was a lefty. At which point we’re looking at Beebe who looks like a natural at C. Maybe he’s a little better at G but we’ve seen what bad C play looks like and I wouldn’t take that risk.

And I’d rather have a veteran WR that is proven too…there just aren’t any viable options that are realistic and / or good.

In 2020 as a freshman Guyton saw action in just one game and played a total of 4 snaps for the Horned Frogs. He allowed no QB hurries, no QB hits, and no sacks while playing sparingly.

As a sophomore in 2021 he played in 7 games and a total of 25 snaps. He conceded just one QB hurry, no QB hits, and no sacks while playing the majority of his snaps at left tackle, and the rest at left guard.

After the end of the season Guyton transferred to Oklahoma where as a junior Guyton saw action in 8 games and totaled 311 snaps. He gave up just 2 QB hurries, no QB hits, and one sack while playing most of his snaps at right tackle.

In 2023 as a senior Guyton saw action in 10 games and played a total of 662 snaps for the Sooners. He allowed 9 QB hurries, 3 QB hits, and no sacks while playing at right tackle.

He was always a projection at Left Tackle and the majority of his snaps were on the right side. Not saying he cannot play the left side, but allow him to develop on his more comfortable side, then make the switch. They also did this with Tyron who was a right tackle in college.

I believe he claimed he grew up most of his life playing LT. I don’t really think it’s more natural on the right side…plus he’s been working his butt off to improve at LT I think it’s wild to flip him back over.

We kept doing that kind of mess with
guys like Golson and they could never get settled.

Just let him be and develop IMO.

If you are going to move on from Steele, you are going to need a plan. Perfect world, you cross train all your tackles. Cowboys may decide they made the investment and just leave him there.

I doubt they move on from Steele, but if they do to your point sign a FA swing OT and let him compete with Richards for the spot.

TG has been playing with the pressures of being a 1st rounder and has gone through some early adversity but has worked his butt off to get to the point where he has only giving up a few pressures the last few games.

I think making a young player move after that is the ultimate progress stopper.

Perhaps, but his penalties have to get better, he was actually benched cause of it. Tyler struggled in that area too as a rookie, but no where near how Guyton has faired.

Hoffman might actually be a better OG than he is an OC

I think Tyler led the league in penalties as a rookie…of course they have to get better but the blind side is more important than the other side and TGs ceiling is waaaaaaay higher than Richards.

I don’t think it matters too much in today’s game, teams will find the weak tackle to attack. Sewell, Lane Johnson’s of the world have been great right tackles

100%…I’m just big on player development and continuity.

Would you draft OT1 if he’s BPA around pick 15?

The first order for the Cowboys to get better on offense is to improve the running game. We need to upgrade the scheme, running backs, and blocking. One of the big issues is Dak is not a running threat anymore so we need a special ball carrier. Dak is an excellent play action quarterback. The Cowboys need to upgrade the roster at several positions and it’s gonna take free agency, trades, draft, and time.

Short window…I think Dak can be great if healthy for maybe another 2/3 years.

All we can hope for is aggressive FA moves for the first time in forever but won’t hold my breath.

It all starts with the coaching hire. Hopefully our great owner/general manager won’t take too much time making this coaching hire. Get the hiring process started as soon as the season is over. I know our owner wants attention so the Cowboys will probably be the last team to hire a coach.

I think MM is a good coach I just want a new play caller.

The talent is more important IMO…we can hire Shanahan but if we bring back a roster with so many holes it won’t matter.

MM is a good coach but the Cowboys should have been better prepared for playoff loses to San Francisco in 2021 and the Green Bay loss last season. It’s time for a change. I just wonder if any coach can really deal with the Circus atmosphere in Dallas. One of my favorite Cowboys team, 2016 Cowboys with Zeke and Dak, was a solid up and coming team that was thrust into the spotlight. Every time I rewatch that loss to the Packers, I feel the Cowboys fell victim to the pressure of America’s team.
