Crazy stat regarding partially blocked punts

According to Opta Stats, in the last 10 NFL seasons, only twice has a partially blocked punt that traveled less than 20 yards been touched by the receiving team and recovered by the punting team for a new set of downs. Both came against the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium (Broncos in 2021, Bengals in Week 14). Dallas would also lose that game against Denver.

at a certain point it is on the player. Anyone who has done special teams should know not to touch that ball. He screwed up; trying to blame everyone but him is just pathetic

The Cowboys have a rather large library of "only team to ever choke like this", and "no team has ever been this bad".

It was a weekly occurrence of the Garrett years, but McCarthy has continued that tradition with several of his own.

This is very specific. How many of those punts have been touched and recovered by the receiving team?

I mean, this statistical anomaly not only relies on the punt to go less than 20 yards AND be touched by the receiving team BUT also be recovered by the punting team. That's multiple variables, which narrows the probability.

I remember the one against Denver. It's a lack of situational awareness. It reminded me a lot of our 2008 game in Pittsburgh in the snow. Dallas was up 13-3 in the 4th and Pitt. was punting from their endzone. Very windy. The punt wasn't blocked by a player, but it was blocked by the weather. Players have to know this. The ball wasn't going to travel very far. The punt only reaches the 30 yard line where it hits a cowboy that wasn't even looking. Steelers recover, come back and win. I'm still mad about that play.

You don't need to over analyze this in an attempt to make excuses. If this happened to the Cowboys once it would be bad enough, but to have done so twice when no other team has done it even once in a decade is a glaring example of the rotten team culture. They literally are an accident waiting to happen on the football field to the point where it defies trends and odds.

It's not an excuse to say that there are multiple variables involved in this stat. That's truth.

Some of our fans act like when something like that is pointed out that those who pointed it out are defending the team. I don't understand that mindset. I guess fans just want to be mad.

pehaps but the NFL likes to find weird stats about us for clicks

That Sam Williams play in Buffalo last year should count too even though it's not the same thing.
