And just me, I'm suspicious that Joneses started at 2 but ultimately said they'd be willing to do 3. That's why, then, they couldn't get to a compromise at 4 yrs.

I admire Mike for sticking to his guns, because if I were him, I'd consider 2 to be an insult, and 3 not sufficient. 4 would have been my minimum.

At the same time, I cannot not admire Joneses for capping it at 3. If I were them, I would have done exactly the same thing. If I'm just looking for someone who could win regular season games, then I'd be willing to do 4, but the prospect of more of the same post season futility would just be too much. In fact, it is only because Mike McCarthy does have a SB ring (attesting to the fact it's plausible he could have a break through) that I'd be willing to go beyond 2.

To me, they were both right.

Well crap. Suddenly, this makes me wonder whether this contractual length standoff has existed since the Green Bay playoff debacle until earlier this month.

If so, it does not make sense to me Jones did not fire McCarthy at some point during the season. What was the expectation? That McCarthy was going to thank his Lucky Magic Charms and eventually concede to his three-year demand?

I'm with Mike on this. After an embarrassing playoff loss, if you aren't going to clear house (players and coaches) but bring everyone back instead then you do the things necessary to make your team better where you got exposed. But the FO did nothing and hung him out to dry before the season even started. So all season long Mike had to hear chatter about whether he would be back or not or he's "coaching for his life," etc. which is embarrassing in itself. So Mike wanted security (and maybe a little payback) and wouldn't budge. I wouldn't either.

^ This.

So, now McCarthy has 0 when he could have had 3. If he did a great job he would have gotten an extension. Now he has 0.

I think you are probably right. Otherwise, agreeing to a 4 year deal would have been the easy thing to do. But if Jerry stretched it from 2 to 3 years, he wasn't going a 4th year. And MM wasn't dropping from 5 to 3 years. Excellent point by you.

Hmmm… they actually considered firing him during the season. A moderately strong finish and players not quitting even with backups was the deciding factor on another chance.
Just basic reasoning skills the offer was 3 years. Take it or kick tires!

McCarthy might be regretting not taking the offer. Now he’s out of work.

true but he also doesnt have to deal with this ss anymore which has to be worth something!

he has his superbowl, he has his money, might just not been worth the headache

Is there any news about McCarthy's proposed three-year compensation? Coaching contracts are not hindered by the NFL/NFLPA CBA.

It is a common negotiation tactic to sweeten one part of an agreement when another part has soured with one of the parties. Hypothetically, it seems to me Jones would have bumped up McCarthy per year compensation to offset the two-year gap. A bump so enticing that McCarthy would have found it extremely difficult to turn down.

After 5 years, and the lack of postseason success I could see some pushback from ownership on not wanting another 5 year deal.
Of course the ownership appears to be too cheap to buyout any deal that's guaranteed salary.

IMO for Mike it's probably for the best to wait another year. Not like the options this year were as good as Dallas was 5 years ago.

fire McCarthy at some point during the season
Unless you have a complete imbecile, that to me is just cutting off your nose to spite your face. Every situation is different, but in this one, no, I see no benefit to having blown it all up like that.

I have no reason to suspect that conversation ever took place ahead of the end of 2024 season. Once it became known that no extension would be forthcoming, then there was no reason to re-engage until the season's end.

...and then they gave Schotty a four year contract.
Which would seem reasonable for a guy with no experience. Had a 63 year-old version of Pete Carroll been a possibility, you might do 5, but anyone unproven seems to me should expect a 4 year contract initially. Anyone.

One is out of a job. So I'd say McCarthy made the wrong decision. He will never be a head coach in this league again. But good on him for sticking to his guns.

Again, we can debate if McCarthy should have been back. That is a different debate. The issue is Dallas had all year long to evaluate, plan and make a decision quickly. To see them drag this out and someone be left with their pants down is such clownish behavier. 2,3,4, 5, 6 years in an accounting error for the Cowboys. To see them run this team like a Burger King franchise is so depressing.
