Grading the 5 new NFL Coaching hires

I mean we have seen it too many times ...........coaches who are offensive or defensive genius play callers or play designers but lack the leadership to run to big show. Even some college football elite coaches couldn't do it and they were used to dealing with the big picture but the NFL is a different monster.
Yeah, it's really hard to say who will have success. When Jerry hired Jimmy, many thought he just did it because they were buddies and there was no way he'd have the kind of success he did in college because it's easy to recruit to Miami while he didn't have that option in the pros. Trying to duplicate that success with Saban, Spurrier, Meyer ... didn't work out to well.

Now, I'm not expecting much with No-Schott (hence the nickname), but that's mainly because of the front office that has a proven track record of ineptness, not because I think he can't win in the right head coaching situation. I don't know if he can, but I also don't know if he can't.

Schottenheimer has been in the NFL 24 years. The Cowboys just made him a HC for the first time. No other team was interested in interviewing him for any position.

Just sayin'...
So........does that mean he can't be a good head coach? I'm pretty sure all those teams have hired at least two or more head coaches, meaning they have gotten wrong a few times. Besides, if you recall, Shotty has turned down a couple of HC opportunities coz as he put it "he wasn't ready"

I think it shows that other organizations that have seen his work over the past 24 years were not impressed enough to give him a HC job.

I think you need to reread my post. What I said was 100% true and I never discussed the past.
It is true if you ignore the past. As far as we know, no one was trying to make him a head coach or even an OC this year. Would they have if he had not been being interviewed by Dallas as head coach? Who knows?

I think at this point in his career, it would be hard for him to become a hot name again for a head coaching position. Teams are looking at these up-and-comers and he's definitely not one of those. A lot of up-and-comers flame out, though, so I can't say hiring a longtime coordinator is worse. He wouldn't have been my choice, but that doesn't mean much.

It seemed to me that you were trying to disparage him for being in the league forever and not being on anyone's hot list. My post simply was to point out that he has been on the hot list before, but his window of opportunity head coachingwise had closed on him because he did not strike while the iron was hot.

And you are far, far too concerned with that "they" think (or 'might' think before they've thought it, lol). I (and others) keep telling you this and like to show you from time to time. Lol.

And once again, and still are wrong. I just tell it like it is. :muttley:

Clearly, making the owner “comfortable” in being a celebrity and face of the franchise was not a factor. Shoddy nails that one hard.

Also, how does one have Johnson #7 and Glenn #21 when neither has coached a single snap? What’s the difference there?

Kind of ridiculous list, similar to draft grades the Monday after.

He's had offers. Did you not hear his presser........so I'm not sure what you mean.

The 51-year-old head coach says that he had turned down previous opportunities because he didn't feel he was ready. "I'm ready now," Schottenheimer said.

Please list the NFL teams that Schotty has been a head coach for.

Spot on. Norv Turner is a good example. Excellent OC that failed as HC. But was the success and failure more about the players he had or his capabilities? He didn’t have Aikman, Irvin, Emmitt, ir the OL in Warshington. Circumstances matter.

What are you talking about........NO ONE is saying he has been head coach. YOU were asking why he has not been hired in 24 years. He stated he had offers but wasn't ready. Meaning more than one team offered him a job as head coach but HE didn't think he was ready. This isn't hard .........

I’m not thrilled with the Schotty hire but honestly, how can you grade a guy who hasn’t even coached a game yet? As frustrated as I am as a fan with this organization, Brian Schottenheimer deserves a chance to show us what he can do…or can’t do.

In other words this is like grading a student on the first day of school before doing anything.

This is all I'm saying ............I mean Ben Johnson, Glenn, and Jags HC may all turn out to be excellent head coaches but just like with Shotty, until they do it we don't know. It's kinda the same take vet players take with rookies..........they don't care how good he was in college. He will earn their respect ON the field.....prove it.

There is no way to justify putting a coach with no head coaching experience ahead of guys that do. There is literally NOTHING to go by and the NFL is littered with great co-ordinators or position coaches that stunk as a head coach.

Besides that, there is a lot of room to question many of the choices. A coach with a terrible roster might be doing the best job to get the group he has to 6-10. A coach with a great roster might be underachieving with 11 wins.
