Stephen Jones: One of our goals is to draft a QB

Probably depends on how high of a pick they use. A 5th rounder likely isn’t being handed the backup gig. Either way it likely means lance is gone.
But if you wait until to draft one in the 5th round.......he's certain backup material and we don't have a 4th.

You know, I think one of our goals is to get a young quarterback in the draft. I don’t know where that’s going to be. That’s why we gave a [fourth-round pick] for Trey. It seems like all the quarterbacks, even guys we have in the fourth round, go in the first. They always go so much higher than what you think.
Take yourself and your father out of the mix. Perhaps then everyone else involved can construct draft boards that more accurately forecast approximately where players will become available.

Yeah agreed. It’s anyone’s guess but I would assume they aren’t taking a QB round 1 or 2. Maybe they surprise us and do like Atlanta a season ago but I’m very skeptical they are looking for anything other than a developmental guy to take the Trey Lance role.

I’d love to see a later project QB and then also a FA QB. There seem to be a lot of former 1st rounders who are settling for backup jobs these days. I wouldn’t hate gambling on one and possibly finding this years Sam Darnold or baker mayfield.

Sure sounds like they don't expect Rush or Trey to return........they may surprise us and draft a day-2 QB to send a message to Dak
And what message is that exactly? I mean daks contract is prohibitive to cutting him, though not entirely impossible, but a 3rd round project qb seems reasonable to be ready to take over when dak is just about done with his current contract.

Are you thinking about it differently?

Exactly my thinking.....Dak's contract has an out after the 2026 season. I think any QB drafted in rounds 1,2 or 3 is more than developmental. Do you not think Dak won't feel some pressure knowing a high-drafted QB is his backup?
