A fifth-year option is a great tool for NFL teams as it gives them certain power over players. A rookie deal, which is four years long, can turn into a five year deal as long as the team wants it to. However, they're not cheap and they're fully guaranteed.

Even for Elam, who qualifies for the most basic one, the Cowboys would have to spend a good chunk of money: $12.68 million.

The problem is, even if it's true that Elam fits the Cowboys defense better than he did with the Bills defenses, it's a lot of money to commit to a player who has struggled during each of his first three seasons in the league.

I agree

they'll probably see this guy right now is a camp body some depth and I guarantee somebody on this new coaching staff asked to go and get this guy..

just like some of these other guys, these are for the new staff they see something in these players that maybe they can adapt to their system so yes he can end up being not on the roster this year or you can end up surprising people and from what I heard yes if you look at his full body of work it doesn't look good he's terrible in man but apparently he's a lot better in zone coverage if they utilize them properly maybe he's gonna be Andrew booth or a little bit better than Andrew booth hopefully but they need bodies at this position right now and that's all my expectations are is that he will compete in camp...

This is still a prove me sport. This will prove itself out and questions still exist in the present. Bob Hayes stuff? No one yet knows.

No time for him to prove anything on the field. They only have a little over a month to decide on his 5th year option. No way they pick that up.
 
The Dallas Cowboys have been methodical in their offseason approach, making calculated moves to address roster gaps.

Despite creating significant cap space—$55 million through restructures of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb—they have yet to make a marquee signing. The elder Diggs would give them instant credibility at the position and Nick Brinkerhoff of USA Today says Dallas is one of the “best fits” for the veteran.

“The Cowboys are still on the hunt for a receiver that can take some attention away from Lamb and the well is running dry. Diggs might be coming off an ACL tear, but going from Houston to Dallas makes plenty of sense, especially with his brother, Trevon Diggs, already on the Cowboys.” — Brinkerhoff, USA Today

His knee injury halted his lone season with the Texans but Diggs was still on pace for 1,000 yards with 496 through eight games.

One would have to be insane to think the Cowboys would pick up this option. I mean, come on.

The 5th year option is why this trade was strange to me.

I see no path to Dallas picking up that option. I'm surprised they didn't go after a player with more control beyond this year.
 
Ever since the NFL made the 5th year fully guaranteed at time of exercising the option, it definitely has made more teams weary of picking it up.

Years ago Jacksonville picked up the non-guaranteed-at time of execution, for the 5th year on Bortles, but it was only guaranteed for injury. He got injured at the end of the season. Which is why they gave him that dumb extension to knock down the current cap hit.

I don't think banning booze is the real deal. Just it all off the shelves. Good idea also? Jerry is alright and still sells all his booze in house as well.

Elam comes from a football family. The Florida native’s father is Abram Elam, who played eight seasons in the NFL, including two different stints for the Cowboys in 2006 and 2011. He is also the nephew to Matt Elam, a safety who was drafted in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Ravens.

Kaiir Elam was hyped early on as the best in his lineage, though. Ranked the 74th best high school player in the nation, and the ninth best player in the talent-rich Florida, Elam chose to stay close to home and play for the Gators.

Elam checks boxes for size, strength, physicality and athleticism, mixing it up with receivers and crowding the catch point downfield. He will surrender spacing on stop and comeback routes, which can be masked by coaching and scheme, but slight stiffness in his mirror and transitions will always be there.

Overall, Elam needs to tidy up his timing and processing issues, but he is a good-sized athlete with natural cover talent and NFL-ready intangibles. With his physicality for press-man, he compares favorably to Tampa Bay’s Carlton Davis when he was coming out of Auburn.

Back when Kaiir Elam was drafted, Lance Zierlein compared him to Jaylon Johnson
Elam will now be coached by Matt Eberflus, Andre Curtis, and David Overstreet II, all of whom were in Chicago when Johnson became an All Pro
 
They obviously are not picking up the 5th year option. He's not getting 12.5 mill guaranteed out of anyone. This is his reclamation season.

Let's stop pretending that Yardbarker provides any meaningful content.
