Mazi Breakout Incoming?

As a Michigan fan, I was a fan of Mazi in college but not of his slow development. The same seems to be true for him in the NFL. But looking at next gen stats and AI analysis of the position... a breakout could be coming.

"based on observations and data, many DTs see a significant rise in their role and impact after a few seasons, often around their 3rd or 4th year."

The talent is there. The preparation time has been put in... what what about the coach? Eberflus is a fan: "Yeah, I'm excited about Mazi," Eberflus said, via the team's website. "I liked him coming out. He's a real explosive athlete, with a big body type that can move really well. Excited about bringing his game to the next level, and he could certainly do that."

Mazi appeared to "turn the corner" late last year and with the appropriate amount of "seasoning"... I think he could be posed for a breakout this year.
Good post Cmoney
I agree somewhat ....... I think Mazi is finally starting to understand what it takes to become an NFL professional. He made a few comments about Parsons and sacks after he was drafted. He was already thinking about stats and the next contract which impacted his development as a rookie IMO. But he was a little more focused on doing his job last season. So I agree, he will continue to improve, but where is his ceiling? That's the question........

Very unlikely. They will likely keep him until he is a FA after his 4th year. He doesnt trade value, and you dont save much cutting him. This year only really determines if they pick his option up
This^^^^ exactly
BTW....when is the deadline, on whether or not they will pick it up?

Um... Eberflus is blind. Or he is spouting the official company line.

Coming out of college, Mazi was STRONG, but slow as molasses in February, in Maine. In his first year, he was forced to lose weight and thus, strength and "anchor". Last year, he did better, but he is NOT, and never has been, "a real explosive athlete".

1. The bar is pretty low at this point
2. They need Mazi so I hope so
3. Still think they need lots of DL help

Right now, the only breakout he's had is probably poison ivy. He's been a big disappointment for a 330 lb dude

Yep, and Osi is going to play like a top DT because he got the bag. That’s how it works.

If they don’t add a top DT talent early in the draft, they are going to get stomped against the run yet again by better teams.

Then again, if they don’t add a WR2 they are in danger of having an inept offense. And oh yeah, they need a top back also.

Anyone else catching the big picture here?
Yes, our GM has no idea what he is doing.

It's most likely a lot of coach speak... but Mazi is an impressive athlete. He did rank #1 on Bruce Feldman's "College Football Freaks List" prior to the 2022 season and when user input his metrics into RAS he scored a 9.99.

Well yes, but also that they annually rely on the draft to immediately fill several positions of need.

Not realistic, and why always they end up short. They would rather leave gaping holes in the 22…all while claiming to want to win, not being in rebuild mode, instead of what they perceive to be an overpay.

Yes Stephen, we know that a draft pick is cheaper than a vet free agent. There’s a reason for that. I can understand being conservative to a point, but thirteen years without a significant signing?

It’s not a terrible philosophy, except that it’s been proven to NOT WORK. Beating up on the weak division made their little act seem better than it actually was/is.

Honestly what kind of leader of anything doesn’t wish to change something that very clearly doesn’t work? I guess it works for him since he makes piles of cash and is a celebrity. Football? Oh yeah…that.

If Mazi and Guyton take big steps forward - that sure would go along way into this teams future outlook. Fingers crossed
Not holding my breath on either. Maybe a bit more on Guyton since he's a year younger, but his problems are more mental than physical, after Pee Wee football (I assume he played that), high school and college if he doesn't have a "football mentality" no amount of time in the pros will fix that.

But also not saying they won't/can't improve, I'll give each a shot, just not in the "hope" category, wait and see for me..

Anytime you draft a interior dt, you better plan on baby steps. I'm not that concerned with him. I think he'll be fine.

I don't see a break out season for him until after he signs with his next team
