Mazi Breakout Incoming?

As a Michigan fan, I was a fan of Mazi in college but not of his slow development. The same seems to be true for him in the NFL. But looking at next gen stats and AI analysis of the position... a breakout could be coming.

"based on observations and data, many DTs see a significant rise in their role and impact after a few seasons, often around their 3rd or 4th year."

The talent is there. The preparation time has been put in... what what about the coach? Eberflus is a fan: "Yeah, I'm excited about Mazi," Eberflus said, via the team's website. "I liked him coming out. He's a real explosive athlete, with a big body type that can move really well. Excited about bringing his game to the next level, and he could certainly do that."

Mazi appeared to "turn the corner" late last year and with the appropriate amount of "seasoning"... I think he could be posed for a breakout this year.
I think he'll continue to improve, but I'm not sure it will be seen as a breakout. Improving at his position will consist mainly of tying up blockers so the linebackers can flow to the ball. If the linebackers are free to go make tackles on run downs, then Mazi will have done his job.

Anyone expecting him to become a three-down player, though, may be expecting too much.

He’s terrible.
Slow off the ball
Leans too much
Bad hand usage
Let’s guys get into his body too easily
No real pass rush moves
You know what... THANK YOU.

Not for your terrible take, but for OPENLY being an Eagles fan on this board. I appreciate it! Most of you guys hide with the stock avatar. Respect.

This fanbase is so corny lol

They have wayyyy too much faith in the product Jerry provides them.
Especially since anyone taken after the 3rd round is a pure dart throw. I just couldn't fathom why so many were slobbering over Reggie Robinson. I mean, the dude turned like a Semi. No way was he ever going to make it. But, no matter what you explained to them, they wouldn't stop gushing. Reggie Robinson was a poor man's Taylor Mays. Fast but not athletic. Lots of people mistake speed for athleticism, but it's not close to the same thing.

I think he has improved each season, just not enough. If he breaks out in season 3, it would not be unusual for a DT, but I still see him getting off slow which puts him at a huge disadvantage against NFL OGs. I expect Mazi will improve a little, but not enough to consider it a breakout. If I am wrong, it will be a pleasant surprise.

At this point, whatever the coaches say should be taken with a grain of salt. They are not going to bad-mouth their own players, especially when they are new coaches. But Dallas will have a decision to make about Mazi's 5th year and my guess is when the time comes they will decline his 5th year option.

They’re blinded by the star on the helmet.

They think once you put that helmet on you automatically get better at football.

They refuse to be honest about players.

from Day 1 the claim that it was coaching that made Mazi slow off the start was GARBAGE.

Very unlikely. They will likely keep him until he is a FA after his 4th year. He doesnt trade value, and you dont save much cutting him. This year only really determines if they pick his option up
Respectfully disagree.
Next year his 4th year rookie salary as a first rounder is significant, 4.2 mil and all can be saved if you cut him. You get a solid young draft pick and he's costing you about 1 mil.
No way his 5th year is getting picked up unless he goes Aaron Donald this year (which is likely not happening). I'm a UofM guy, so I was hopeful for him, just thought he was overdrafted. I remember the playoff game that year, when Steve Avila (who was an NFL prospect) just destroyed Mazi, and Mazi just gave up. I mean Avila just owned him and Mazi looked like he wanted off the field. That showed me a lot. As a DT, you can lose snaps, but you can't give up. I just don't think the mental toughness is there, despite the obvious physical tools. Mazi actully would have been better served as a later pick, with no expectations. He could have developed mentally for the NFL slowly. As a first rounder, with high expectations, he just wasn't tough enough mentally. My hope is he can be developed into a solid, rotational players at least, which is still possible IMO.

Take is spot on. Watch him, he's hot garbage

Guy is a freak athlete but a terrible football player.

Nothing personal, but the only thing Michigan players and the Dallas Cowboys have in common is they're both insanely over hyped and never show up when times get tuff!

Mazi is what happens when you value testing more than the tape. Dallas fell in love with the athletic profile and testing and ignored the college tape which showed very little of the athleticism translated to the field.

Tape is the gospel. Underwear olympics should just be used to confirm what you see on tape.

I suppose it's possible.

However, while it is true that some DT's take longer to develop, I always thought that didn't apply to 1st round picks.

When1st round DTs are legit they seem to contribute almost right away to some degree and then have breakout 2nd seasons.

I thought that was the very point of them being 1st round picks.

If you get very little in two seasons then that is not a good sign.
