Thoughts on Will McClay being the GM once Jerry steps down

He didnt like booze, the party bus, microphones and interviews.
Maybe he thought they should just hire a good HC, and a real GM !! And win more SB's.

All those would get him in the doghouse pretty quick.
lol. I can see a family meeting:
Jerry: we got to make more money through bitcoin
Jerry Jr: should we just win games
Stephen: the salary cap is a real thing
Jr: shouldn’t we just try and win
Charlotte: me and Rich are starting an only fans page
Jr: shouldn’t we just concentrate on football and win games
Jerry: security remove the boy!!
Stephen: good now that Jr is gone we can concentrate on what really matters, us being seen.

I don’t know about that. 12 hours ago I would have completely agreed with you. Take this for what it’s worth but I watched Mike Fisher at 6:pm yesterday and he reported that there is a plan in place for Jerry’s “transition”. So according to Fisher once Jerry passes the roles have already been established and a document has been sent to the league of:
Stephen- co owner, responsible for day to day operations/marketing
Charlotte: co owner, responsible for league issues
Jerry Jr.: has a role but not reported
McClay: GM of the team

Fisher went on to say that the plan has already been implemented in small increments. Example he gave is Charlotte and Stephen’s titles have been switched to “co-owner”.

So this info is coming from Fisher’s show that aired 4/17/25 at 6:00 pm. Now I know Fiah can be a hack and a Jerry Jones/Cowboys apologist but take it for what it’s worth.

I personally would love this if there was clearly defined roles of Stephen handles one thing, Charlotte another, Jerry Jr something else and the football decisions are handled by McClay. I would love that McClay could handle any and all football decisions without interference. That’s what Fisher alluded will happen as the “the transition plan”.
1053 the fan said something very similar this a month or so ago. Except they said that Charlotte would take over more of the ownership.

I would rather a different gm tho.

I'd be fine with it. Personally, I have a lot of respect for McClay. Jerry doesn't always listen to him so he takes more heat than he probably deserves. And, everyone misses on evals. That's part of the game.
I'm would be suprised if Jerry listened to him much at all.

I know Jerry isn't perfect. But I just can't dis on an 80 year old doing what he loves and does a decent job.

I have a feeling it'll get worse after he's gone before it gets better.

Yes, I believe when Fisher was talking about it he referenced 1053 The Fan as his source. I tried to paraphrase off of memory so I may have gotten some of the roles wrong. But what I was excited about is a plan that is compartmentalized.

I would rather have a different GM than McClay as well. But I would like to see what McClay, or any GM, could do without interference from ownership. I feel the main problem with the Cowboys is culture. Specifically undefined roles from ownership on down to coaching as far as player interaction. I’m excited about the idea of a plan for Jerry passing away that the player personal and interactions would go to the HC and GM. Charlotte, Jr, and Air Quotes would stay away from the players. I feel that would knock out 90% of our culture problems. IMHO

He may step down in the near future. He might out of the picture by this time next year.
There is only two ways Jerry will ever be “out of the picture”:
1. He’s dead.
2. A scandal so bad he’s forced out.

That’s it. If he’s breathing and still legally the owner he will pull all strings. Sober truth. Everything else is wishful thinking.

How would you feel about Mcclay being our GM, do you think it's a no brainer, he's earned it, we saw this coming, or you hate this and want someone else to fulfill the role??? Please give your thoughts
Oy!
It couldn't hurt. Vat, we expect a Brad Holmes or a John Lynch?

McClay is so over rated......It's not even funny

Well this team has no actual GM, Clay has to work within the boundaries Stephen and Jerry
allow him. He has to please both of them.
For example who actually makes the 1st round picks ?? Jerry, Stephen, or Clay ?
Is it all of them, if so who finalizes the pick?

I think in Philly Howie has info from scouts and HC, and he makes all the calls and picks.
Much more efficient .

On trades or FA I think Howie just presents to HC and owner then makes the deals.
In Dallas you have to get jones boys approval , which is near impossible for any big players or deals.
So at very least, Clay has one hand tied behind his back,(by the jones boys) or maybe both of them lol.

Thank goodness that they hit big on Lamb, Parsons, and Tyler Smith.

Things could only improve in my opinion.

McClay just got a five-year extension on top of this finale year of his current contract. They intend to keep him around, so I think it's just the natural order of things for him to be the GM after JJ. I'm good with it.

he could always get out of his deal to go somewhere else, i mean they probably wouldn't let him, he could get fired
