Mailbag: trade down from 12 to add picks

It's giving another team 2 to 3 chances at a starter instead of one shot.

Please let the trades stop and all this fall on the stubborn owners doorsteps.

I suspect if it gets to the point of way less trading, owners will come together in one of their off-season meetings and collaboratively say "trades made the draft more fun and interesting, let's create a new value chart to drum up trades"

Giving a team 3 picks in the first to fourth rounds for one pick is robbery. No way it continues, assuming all is real.

Someone might be able to provide stats that show trades are already way down from this effect.

I'm not giving a team 3 picks for 1. It actually sounds stupid...and I'm lousy with money in a world created to steal from me(inflation)

But it's all a lame conditioning attempt for theft.

Something has to change if $2 for a $1 is seen as too expensive in the future.

I'm all for less trades. Take the phones out of the trade room if owners are gonna be unreasonable.

Now we're talking. I think he is right in his scenario. It would manifest itself through less trading up. That's realistic. Then what you suggested could be a result of that happening. If it happens.

I'd probably do that even though the draft value chart says you're not getting enough. I don't think you're going to get equal value trading down this year.

I would likely still approve of that deal. There’s still a great chance to get a rd 1 receiver at #18

Maybe if Jeanty is on the board, possibly Sanders since QBs are so sought after.

I just think the price to trade up is too steep and all teams see it that way in 2025.

Jeanty is supposed to be a generational talent...I could see someone taking a chance on that even though rb's have been devalued for 15 years now.

The lowest I have seen from the Cowboys was 17.
They used to sneak release their boards.
17-19 was pretty common.
12 is very low.

Sadly....I just don't see it happening. This franchise has become so complacent with mediocrity....because it is the Dallas Cowboys and it sells itself....you could slap a label on dog crap.....and Jerry could sell it. That's what this ownership has learned....and they are OK with it. Just stay relevant.....and that's why your gonna get someone like Golden....to sell tickets...because he's a Texas boy. Honestly....the situation has become so nauseating....It just doesn't matter who the coach is...because you know who is pulling the strings behind the scenes...and they have no clue. Realistically, you could ask for pick 137 also and still be short on value.

Dallas isn't 3 mediocre players away either.
And they have already demonstrated a good but not great starter is going to be let walk in free agency.

This team isn't getting fixed in one draft, but it starts with getting a true R1 guy not 5 R3 guys.

I don't think Dallas would do that, not enough for moving down 6 spots. Not in this draft. Throw in maybe a 4th round, or even a 5th round. That gives them another pick to move back into the 3rd or 4th.

Not it isn't but they have many holes to fill. They don't need a luxury or glamour pick either. They have to build a playoff roster.

Using those top 17 picks you listed got how many playoff wins? Or are we valuing pro bowls over that now?

I suspect Jerry has NDAs around a few important people(HC, DC, OC and QB) at all times, and he takes over if the Cowboys make playoffs.

For money reasons, he wants early playoff exits, so he takes over to ensure that happens.

I have stated over and over, the best way for the Cowboys to attack this draft is simple. Their first pick should be a WR named either McMillian, Golden, Egbuka or Burden. If their pick at 12 arrives and there is QB on board and still 3 of the 4 WR available, you instantly trade down to highest bidder in the 18-25 range. You will still be able to get one of those WR in that range. Trading down to 20 with Denver if they really want Hampton can net you their 20, 51 and 4th round pick. This is based on the Jimmy Johnson pts system. Throw in a bidding war for that 12 pick and this or something similar to this should be easily acquired.

Now imagine what the Cowboys would be able to do with a 1st, two 2nds, 3rd and 4th. This is not to mention they have other picks to move up later in the draft if they wish to move up in the 4th round for a second pick. There is the potential for the Cowboys to have 6 picks in the top 125 of a stacked draft. They would easily be able to fill voids at WR, CB, RB, Edge, DL and LB.

My hope is for:

1st - Golden/Egbuka (WR)
2nd - Amos/Revel (CB)
2nd - Henderson/Judkins/Johnson (RB)
3rd - Swinson/Oledajo (Edge)
4th - Lott/Walker (DT)
4th - Paul/Stutsman/Bassa/Carter (LB)

I love it. I wish they would do it. Unfortunately, it just seems like too much work and grinding for Jerry and Stephen. They prefer to watch the draft like a fan instead of WORKING it.

What I'm saying is, Dallas isn't calling anyone. They're waiting for the call. No team is going to call another team to move up and offer them less. Like if I called you and ask you if you'd like to trade back to my slot, then I offered you peanuts. You'd tell me to pound salt.

You are right but there are always teams that "fall in love" with a player and could want to move up to get him. Every team has the same trade value chart now so the price to move up or down is pretty universal. If the Cowboys want to move down a spot or two it could easily get them back into the 4th round. If they want to move down six or seven spots they can get another 3rd rounder, and so on.
