Does this draft immediately make us closer to the eagles/commanders?

We appear to have improved several areas. Strengthened the team. In my view that is a win for this first step in rebuilding. As to comparing with the rest of the NFC East…? No clue. But, I wasn’t expecting to be contending in 2025. Too many holes & questionable QB situation.

We got talented players and new coaches. I don't think we got closer to the good teams, in fact farther away.....but let's give these coaches a chance to utilize the talent in a way we haven't seen yet. I hope them the best and who knows, maybe these players are the ones that fit the style/talent they want and need to succeed.

Jerry is always selling building in the draft, while that's true he's the cheapest man in the league in FA.

I don't think Jerry realizes that every other team drafts also. The answer is no.

I don’t think you can just plug the commanders in as an elite team. The momentum sure points that way and if I had to bet I’d say yes they will be better next year but 1) Quinn was always gonna get that team to play hard year 1 but we have to see them do it again.

Not saying they won’t,Daniel’s is gonna be very good but they have to go out and put together another double digit win season. The eagles are more proven and have more of a track record.

Regardless, was going to be difficult no matter what we did coming out of the draft and saying with certainty we are on either teams level.

Early take on our draft is most of the guys we got are really good football players. The guys from rounds 1-3 will all either start or have big impact almost immediately. The Day 3 guys are ok on paper… BUT I can’t say that this draft has immediately put this team in a better position to compete with the eagles and commanders. I Just can’t.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the guys we drafted in rounds 1-3.
  • 1st rounder Tyler Booker is a plug and play beast at G, I wish they could’ve traded down a couple spots to pick up a 4th rounder, but still a solid pick. A high character guy who was a captain at Alabama.
  • 2nd round DE Donovan Ezeiruaku is a very talented pass rusher. EZ is also a high character guy who was also a team captain at Boston College.
  • 3rd round CB Shavon Revel is a first round talent recovering from a knee injury. Where have we heard that before? Hopefully he’s fully recovered by Sept.
No problem really with those guys as far as their talent. They should contribute immediately. But if we are all being honest without the blue tinted fan glasses, the Cowboys STILL have glaring weaknesses at WR, RB and DT, three positions they badly needed an influx of top shelf talent.

So on Day 3 we acquired:
  • 5th round RB Jaydon Blue and he’s fast but he’s also small and not more than 8-10 touches a game guy who has had fumble issues. Are we better at RB? Hmmm….
  • 5th round traded up to get Florida LB Shemar James. A talented kid if not a little small. Seems a lot like last year’s 3rd round pick Marist Liafau.
  • 6th round picked up T Ajani Cornelius from Oregon. Backup swing T was not on my bingo card as a pressing need.
  • 7th round got UCLA DT Jay Toia, a big aggressive DT. But does this late sleeper suddenly make Mazi Smith a bad memory?
Like all drafts we need to wait on grading the 2025 Cowboys draft for at least a year; probably more like two years. Starting immediately, fans and the media will issue grades now but we really won’t know until pads are on and the real bullets fly in the regular season.

But if I am answering the question, “Did this draft get us closer to the eagles and commanders?” I would have to say no at this point.
Remember how much better the Cowboys were almost immediately after drafting Zach Martin?

It’s not that we didn’t improve it’s they also got better
And the Eagles just keep good getting players fall into there Draft

Yeah
Washington is going to push Philly
They got better in off season with Trades and FA
We will battle GMen for third

No. We were 31st in defense last year and picked a couple of bottom of the barrell guys to address the main problem. The other teams draft and improve as well. If anything I am more worried about the Giants. Wilson could EASILY play at Mr Oopsie's level or better, and their defense could be sneaky good. They had a nice draft

I agree with you.

The problem I have is really more about what we didn’t do in this draft: I cannot say with certainty that we addressed DT or WR in this draft and RB we added a good part time weapon in Blue but he’s not a back that can be counted on for more than 10 touches a game.

no way not even close. especially the eagles we are not even in the same level.
If you want to get depressed compare their starters last year to ours. The difference is so huge. That's the gap between us and competing for a championship.

I have no thoughts about that.
Bye.

No, because they actually use free agency to plug in holes. We pretty much just used the draft to replace the players that left. We aren't even better than last year.

1st round pick was essentially to help fil in the hole left by Zack Martin. 2nd pick there to fill the hole left by Demarcus Lawrence. That 5th rounder running back was there to fill in the hole left by Rico Dowdle. The cb was taken in the 3rd I guess will be the eventual replacement for Diggs...

Then we go bargain budget hunting on free agency again. What playmakers did we add? We just essentially refreshed the same losing formula.

I don't really see the 'winning formula' we're trying to build here. We're going to be a run heavy team but we have a team filled with small to smaller runningbacks? Defensively we have issues against the run, but we've done nothing to shore that up.

I really don't see the winning identity of this team.

After 30 years and you still question how good this team might be? We have had some great drafts and some crappy drafts and it never really makes any difference. The league could allow JJ to pick the first 10 picks in every draft and put together the best players in the league and we would still not win crap. JJ does not know how to put a winning team together and never will. The names on the back of the Jersey will change but the outcome will always be the same. All you can do is look at the start of each season as one more closer to JJ being gone. That is the only hope as Cowboy fans that we have left.

No.

Not without a dominant running back(game) or run stopping unit.

Did the draft address this concern?
