When was the moment you began to feel old?

I just turned 40.

About a year ago I was sweeping the floor, and I bent down to pick up the dust pan and must have pinched my sciatica.

I was in so much pain and could hardly move.

I wouldn’t even turn to the right for like 2 weeks.

Luckily it was just a temporary thing and my back went back to normal.

But man that made me feel old. Like damn I can’t even sweep the floors without risking injury now. lol

Welcome to the club nobody wants to join!

They say getting old is better than the alternative, but I'm not so sure.

Four years ago I was in town with my dog. Young man about 17 approaches, interested in the dog. He asked me how I came up with her name. That discussion led me to ask him what he thought of the name I had for the puppy I was getting in a few weeks. I figured there was a connection between the two names and I wondered if he would put two and two together. Told him I was thinking "Bonzo". He asked why. I answered that it was the nickname of John Bonham. He said "who?" I sighed internally and answered "the drummer for Led Zeppelin". he said... drumroll please... "who?" I had never felt as old as I did in that moment.
One of the best and smartest dogs we ever had was named Bonzo, a Border Collie who was extremely intelligent. She never could get the hang of the Bonzo triplets though.

You began to feel old? For me, it was in the last couple years when folks at the feed mills started asking if I was sure I didn't need help loading. Dang! I've been tossing 50lb bags into the bed of a truck for a long time. Now I look so old, I shouldn't be able to do it anymore?
Physically I feel good…..but when I started seeing guys being drafted names Shaquille and Raekwon? That was like my oh crap I’m getting old moment lol.

I discovered I was old when I noticed the years blur. I remember when 5 years seemed like a long time, but now it's a drop in the bucket. There is a mathematical formula explaining how our sense of time changes as we get older. It's basically ratio of our lives. When you're 10 years old then adding 5 years is basically adding half your life experience. Being over 60 the 5 years ratio is much smaller and doesn't seem as significant.

If you have 12 month prison sentence and 3 months are added it seems as if the additional months are torture, but adding 3 months to a 20 year sentence is nothing. That's what the years feel like when you get older. The years don't pack as much punch.

It was told to me that you discount the first 5 years of life, after that the passage of time is the same from 5 to 10 as 10 to 20 as 20 to 40 as 40 to 80.

As i think back on my own life those ratios seem about right.

I was in a bit of a state of shock, when I realized the "temporary" house I currently live in has been my home twice as long as the house I grew up in.
