The Pros and Cons of acquiring George Pickens

This is a great very informative post and thread Topic. Ty Bob. The facts on all sides have been presented, now we can decide what we think. That's all anyone can ask. I like the swing, and the effort by the team. The failure in this would have been NOT SWINGING at all. I give them an A for effort. Real tangible, needle moving effort, possible results.

All of this Id classify as on field or football related concerns. I don't think anyone is minimizing them. It's a legit concern. But when I was in my early 20s I sure did some some crazy immature stuff, a lot from a place of anger and frustration. Thankfully I was given opportunities to mature and put those things behind me.
An appropriate way to put this is to say he has issues with professionalism and discipline. However, as a professional football player, he has to know the expectations and apparently is unwilling or unable to meet them. The Steelers for sure have more intel on why these things kept happening and decided enough was enough. Oversleep one meeting or be late due to a flat tire, that's one thing. Doing it repeatedly is quite another.

One concern with Pickens is that every receiver that’s left Pittsburgh has fallen off. Antonio Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mike Wallace and Santonio Holmes.

Pickens, at this point in his career, despite personality, qualifies as a strong addition for on the carpet results that he will provide. That is still is top shelf and yes, still growing. Commitment is an element that in a team sport, is shared, but on the level of interaction of team directions. He needs the team as well.

For the immediate season, he will produce in the slot of what is needed by this team.

Movement elements for both the offense and defense are at top shelf as well competitive against any team at the level of Pro Football.

He was a major piece. The wide receivers, running backs, tight ends, and quarterbacks are capable of meeting injuries and top shelf game flow strengths.

Questions remain at the offensive tackles and defensive tackles. There are valid players at both of these positions.
The element that has to be proven is heart, but that has to proven out in sacrifice, but channeled by focus and spontaneous team execution. That is the real nature of football...meeting game changers and winning.

Experience is determined by leadership. This picture for Dallas is fully football for our Cowboys and while they are on the carpet.

This fan is excited due to potential and opportunity.

Pickens will now move by how much he gives to team goals and not just vanity of him being paid and seeking a personal high ground of that sight in his own eyes. Football says team.

He will receive plenty of cash while playing for Jerry Jones...fact. How much he loves winning will be shown as he seeks payoff or a top team. He won't now become the driving force in the NFL, but good he is.

I just hope that he isn't blinded by top dollar and a personal reward limitation. Glad to have him here and now.

100% agree

It could be the kid got bored and frustrated up in Pittsburgh. Think about it, at Tennessee he was the guy. His college QB was better than the junk he had in Pittsburgh. Blaming HIM for that mess is asinine.

The Dallas Cowboys desperately needed some help at the WR position and Jerry got aggressive and traded for the Steelers mercurial receiver George Pickens for a reasonable cost. No one would question Pickens’ talent.

To me, the good news of this trade outweighs the potential bad news.
THE GOOD NEWS (PROS)
  • Pickens is a real first round talent, who at 24 has huge upside. If he can show more maturity here, he as a chance to be a stud.
  • Pickens averages over 16 yards per catch in his career and has shown some consistency in getting open and making plays.
  • He has averaged about 60 receptions for 1,000 yds in his first three seasons, which is certainly very good for the role we need him to be here.
  • He’s been durable, playing in every game in 2022 and ‘23, and 14 last year.
  • He didn’t cost a fortune and has the potential to give this offense some juice it desperately needs
THE POTENTIAL BAD NEWS (CONS)
  • He has been one of the most fined players in the NFL for taunting and silly unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, accumulating nearly $300k in fines.
  • He has a tendency to reduce effort and disappear when he is not targeted.
  • His target to reception ratio has been 59% but he has not played for the most accurate passers the last 3 years.
  • He only has one more year on his rookie contract. If he has a great season will JJ pay market price to keep him?
Overall I like this trade. Pickens gives this offense a real weapon and should force defenses to have to account for more than just Lamb. He didn’t cost a fortune either.

Key questions remain- Can GP grow up and become a more complete player and maximize his potential? Will he become a one year rental or will JJ be able to lock him down in a second contract?

It’s going to be fun waiting to see.

Pickens has tremendous talent, and I dare say that even in terms of talent he is more better than CeeDee, here the challenge is for the coaches, if they manage to tame the beast, and the beast in terms of potential and production explodes, and the Cowboys somehow or another manage to retain him, the Cowboys would have made the best move since TO, and they would vindicate themselves with the fans.

They are definitely neck and neck talent wise. Like twins. We lucky. Now we got 2 ceedees basically.

Also, if you’re gonna spend a third like it’s house money, why not have traded up for TMac and have that guy for FIVE years instead of ONE? Could have found a guard later.
There wasn't a player in this draft worth trading up for.

The Cowboys needed MORE picks not less.

The Cowboys didn't just draft a guard, they got the best.

Sure…classify them however you want and do with the information what you will.Im just the messenger.

I’ve just seen multiple posters / content people on social media act like he’s a choir boy and there are no concerns.

These are major red flags IMO especially for a team trying to build a high character / leadership type culture but that’s just my opinion. I’ll be rooting for him and hope he grows up this year…would absolutely love to be wrong about what I anticipate is going to happen.

:flagwave: I'm not at all worried about the problems at Pittsburgh. I am interested in the player they gave up for their own reasons. The player is needed by Dallas. Hoooah!

I am thrilled that we brought in a WR whose best routes to date are a perfect fit for what Dak does best, and while I was hoping for Cooper, getting a younger guy is even better.

Sidenote….Pickens was picked in round 2 and was the 18th ranked wr that year.

Note…I read #18 receiver somewhere, but draft buzz had him as the 7th best receiver in that draft

The highlights I have seen show he is a great talent and this was a position of need. His attitude is a concern but that why you pay the coaches the big bucks.

He is a one year rental so if he flames out or balls out, the Cowboys can make a retention decision at the end of the year. No one player will take the Cowboys over the top but at least this next season will be interesting either way.

After 55 years as a fan, and based on the last 30 years of Jerry, my expectations for Championships are pretty much luke warm at best, nowadays I'll just accept the small victories as they come.

Well, I think that many of you Cowboys fans are placing expectations on poor George that are way too high.

Remember, this GM places a value of two 1st round picks on 151 receptions for 2341 yards and 12 TDs....over four years,

That's what the Joey Galloway trade gave us.

Or, you might consider the numbers generated by Roy Williams Jr., 94 receptions for 1324 yards and 13 TD's....over three years.

Jerry got us a bargain on that one, one 1st round pick and one 2nd round pick.

We are talking about the same GM that made the trade two days ago.

It might look a little different occasionally, but things around here never change.

Appreciate the fair and balanced thoughts. I definitely think the benefits far out weigh the downside of a potential difficult player and tossing away a 3rd round pick. Chances are if we don't re-sign him and produces similarly to his first 3 seasons it's probably a 3rd round comp pick back.

Georgia. Not sure why I keep saying Tennessee lol. I think I'm thinking about Carl Pickens lol.

For the Steelers, Pickens was the leading receiver in two out of his three NFL seasons after being selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Georgia. While his role will likely be different with the Cowboys alongside Lamb, he's not one to assign labels like "WR1" or "WR2."

"You guys making a 1A and 1B and all this, honestly that's the first time I've heard of any of that stuff," Pickens said. "I feel like two receivers are kind of normal. When I used to watch football, there was always a good receiver and then there was another good receiver on the side of him. I just feel like we're going to work off each other very well."
