Lets talk Tolbert

Tolbert has improved each of his first three seasons. What he lacks is consistency.

Last year he led the team with 7 TDs, which is a clear indication Dak and CeeDee were both banged up.

To me Tolbert is a slightly bigger and faster version of Patrick Crayton from back in the day. A nice third or fourth option in the passing game but not a guy you want as your clear cut number two receiver.

TDs are a tough stat to go by though. Very random. Jerry rice is the all time leader but had 8 in 96’ and 15 in 95’. Randy moss is #2 all time and had 3 in 06’ followed by 23 in 07’.
As for Moss, I think he went from the Raiders in '06 to the Patriots in '07. Having that Brady guy as his QB helped the TD stat.

I am still trying to understand any kind of hype on the guy? Tolbert has been no more than a training camp hype virtuoso.

When Tolbert got his opportunity last season, he did absolutely nothing. Dallas needs a number 3 WR and i dont think Tolbert or anyone behind him last year is it.

The undrafted guys Holden and Kelly are the next two up id see what they both have.

At this point I want nothing else to do with Tolbert. Imo he isn't even better than Turpin who imo should be the clean 3rd WR.

Nobody even talks about that BTW. Everyone so stuck on Tolbert and i have absolutely zero idea why. He is not good at all, and being a camp Queen does nothing for the Cowboys in the regular season.
Interesting because I see Tolbert as a #2 and it's Dak thats holding him back. Pickens is Mehhh he reminds me of Gallup. Pickens only had 3 TDs last year while Tolbert had 7.

He did absolutely nothing?

He had six TDs last season which I believe led the team.

He had Trey Lance and Cooper Rush throwing to him the majority of the season.

EVERYONES receiving numbers were down.

I swear we have a bunch of casuals in the forum.
Yeah Tolbert didn’t deserve his own thread. He may not be a 2 but certainly a 3 I’m comfortable with.

I watched enough of Tolbert to know he is at best a Noah Brown who is a poor blocker. He was schemed open in the red zone, but from what I saw, he couldn’t separate, not even against safeties. I’ll take Lamb, Pickens, Mingo, and Turpin all over him. He will have his hands full with Flournoy and the undrafted rookies. He should never be more than #5 to me.

Agreed. Fans are forgetting Ryan Flournoy too. A faster and more explosive option than Tolbert if he can put it all together.

Also I am not hating on Jalen Tolbert, I just think he's a limited player (which is why we all wanted an upgrade at WR).

Now that Pickens is here I can't wait to see who emerges from the pack of Tolbert, Mingo, Flournoy, Brooks, etc. for the last WR spots. Leaving out Turpin because his role here as a KR/utility guy is secured.

Hype, there has been no hype about Tolbert.
Matter of fact it seemed many fans did not like the pick at all. Said he was from a small school, so his numbers from there would not hold up in the NFL.
Year two fans or a few were coming around a little bit. As that improved last year.

Holden was an UDFA, and seems some fans are hyping him more than they ever did Tolbert.
Holden played on a top NCAA team. So fans will remember his name. So assume he is better than he may be.

he was miscast as a #2 WR, but he had 49 receptions that puts him 53rd among WRs..and 610 yards which is also 53rd among WRs and and 7 TDs which puts him 26th among WRs. he did have Rush as QB for half the season.

so its not that he did absolutely nothing. Mingo did absolutely nothing. he can be a good WR3. him and turpin can keep defenses honest and bring different things to the table.

so right now Turpin and Tolbert are WR3, that can be swapped depending on the play call. IMHO, Mingo is 5th on the team and has to play special teams to stick or even lets get rid of him.

He's better than Turpin,Kelly,Holden,Flournoy, Brooks or Campbell. Is he an elite WR? No Is he an average WR that isn't a starter? Yup.

He had the promise of being a starter when drafted and that fell through because he has shown he isn't on that level.

Lot of people seem to think Turpin is better because he is fast and that is nice but Tolbert still can be a better WR than a specialist gadget returner.

Now if they keep him? IDK after this season he could be gone, he is like a slightly better Noah Brown.

Also the potential of Mingo is there, but I wouldn't hold my breath that he is better than Tolbert either.
Turpin is a GREAT returner. He is not 3rd WR material. Be happy he excels in one area, unlike others.
Let Tolbert show his value on his FOURTH year.
Because if anything, Yoda believes in player development, no matter if it takes 10 years.

I think Tolbert has a chance to contribute as a third receiver, but I agree on Turpin, I hope No-Schott does a good job mixing him in because he has shown he can be a dynamic playmaker.

I am hopeful on Turpin being used more because of what No-Schott has said this offseason: “I think he’s a dynamic weapon. I can’t say enough about his growth in the understanding of the football scheme over the last couple years. The game changing plays he’s made for us, dynamic weapon. There’s really nothing he can’t do, we’re moving him in positions that two years ago we would [think] I don’t know if that would work out.”

Seems a bit extreme to crush a WR who had 7 TDs with 2nd n 3rd string QBs. Tolbert got better last season, and should get better this offseason. I hope Tolbert sets his mind to compete with Pickens and see how much better he can get.

I feel there's too much criticism of Tolbert, especially, if you look around the league at average WR2s, which, for some of the season he was actually a WR3.

Projected WR3s in the NFCE '25:
PHI - Jahan Dotson (19 rec, 219 yds)
WAS - Noah Brown (35 rec, 453 yds, 1 td)
NYG - Wandale Robinson (93 rec, 699 yds, 3 td)
DAL - Jalen Tolbert (49 rec, 610 yds, 7 td)

Criticism for last season is debatable, too me, but down talk for '25 as a WR3 seems like personal bias or ignorance of other teams WR3.

Tolbert had 7 TD’s averaged 12.4 yards a catch and people are beetching about him ? Huh ?
I hope his agent and Jones village give him the second contract . He’s a steady 3

What do you mean hype the guy's done nothing but progress and it slow but it's a progression nonetheless, you do realize that his numbers last year were as good as about 75% of either the free agents or trades made since February???? those guys production have dropped off & his was as good as them...

You trying to tell me that somehow 610 yards at 12.4 yards per carry and seven touchdowns has you have zero interest on the guy?

It took miles Austin three years before he put up a single stat like the dude was buried and then outside of his hamstrings he had a couple really great back to back years sometimes you have to develop a guy same thing with Patrick Creighton Cedric Wilson I mean these dudes didn't just overnight came in and were good it always amazes me how some people can't see it it's like you can't see the forest through the trees the man's been steadily getting better he's been better than Brandon cooks the last two years they have the same numbers except for Toberts are flipped his are going up Brandin Cooks went down same thing go look at Debo Samuels last three seasons a steady decline michael Gallup retires had nothing that trade for Amari Cooper to Buffalo split in two for two teams the numbers barely even got close to Tolbert same with Keenan Allen he had more yards but he only had 10 yards per catch I mean all these players I'm probably forgetting some that were moved in the offseason as far as what we were looking for as a number 2 and none of them were better than Tolbert's and some were worse that's why.

You're hating on a player that has been developing slowly but developing nonetheless I mean seven touchdowns is nothing to sneeze at but 600 yards twelve point four yards per catch is actually pretty damn good.... He needs to be WR3 splitting carries with Turpin Depending on the defense we're playing depending on the situational football he deserves to be right there I'd like to see more Turpin as well we're going to see blue out of the backfield but you're dismissing a man who had numbers that stacks up with a lot of the guys you think that names means something anymore they were all on a steady decline his numbers were close to I mean not exact as Cooper Kupp who got thirteen million dollars we got this kid on a rookie deal..

This team might carry six wide receivers and he's gonna be part of it that's a fact he's not going anywhere I promise you he's gonna be active on game day every game unless he gets hurt or something crazy happens...

And that's just our opinion but apparently he's still here because the coaches like him he's not the one on the bubble you do realize there's guys like Brooks and Cropper and Mingo and Florinoy who have done nothing they're the ones that their jobs are on the line and I don't care if you'd like the kid from Oregon he hasn't done a single thing that can threaten Tobert yet..

tolbert has real numbers last year that says he's an nfl wide receiver he's basically becoming Noah Brown there's nothing wrong with that noah Brown been rolling around in the NFL and he's been able to add something to some teams you can't have pro bowlers at every position...
Good post!!

He has the talent of a 4 tbh imo. You hope now that you have Pickens that either he (being Tolbert) will step up as the 3rd receiver or someone else will (Mingo/Flournoy/Parris) in that order. The Oregon guy may be an option as well. Someone should be able to eat with CD and Pickens taking up a lot of the attention.
