The Dak to Pickens combination shows extremely high potential

You really don't see it, do you? That's how psychology operates though.

The thing I'll be watching for is the deep, deep ball. Again, not that "20+ air yards" stuff the statisticians call a "deep" pass, but the bomb balls. Those are game-changing plays that hype the offense and deflate a defense. Unfortunately, Dak is just not good at those. Now that we have a guy who's good at getting down field this will be in the spotlight. Did we just not have the players and that's why? To be continued.
I do see it.

Teams call different downfield plays as long or not, or big plays. Some teams say 20 yards or more are big plays. Garrett used to say 18 yards or more. That included running plays. Ball in air 18 yards or if a 6 yard pass and 12 YAC.
Now was that due to the playbook, or the QB, or the WR's. Who knows. As that included Romo and Dak.

I actually think Pickens will improve Dak in that area. Or, well, I hope he does. We will see.

One of the main reason the “statisticians” use 20+ yards is because the sample size for 30+ is too small to be meaningful. And 20+ yards does include 30+ yards as well.

There are a number of stats using 20+ yards. Some use 20+ air yards, some use 20+ downfield yards which could be 30-40+ air yards on a 20 yard downfield pass.

But if you are going to use an arbitrary number to judge performance on a year to year basis, there has to be a large enough sample size to make the judgement valid. That’s just basic statistics.

Dez's numbers tanked under Dak. Dak doesn't like to throw a contested ball. He needs separation.
Underrated post.

For this to work out, Dak needs to improve. Does anyone really think that happens?

He'll still force it to CD.

We'll just ignore the fact that multiple leg injuries slowed Dez down by the time Dak got here. And the fact that Dak's numbers in contested passes have consistently ranked near the top of the league since 2019.

Facts that don't fit the narrative are just so inconvenient.

In 2023, his last full season, Dak threw into tight windows on 22.5 percent of his throws, the highest in the league. And he was the only quarterback over 20 percent.

Kind of weird for a guy that doesn't like to throw a contested ball, isn't it?

100%…I posted earlier that outside of ‘21 and ‘22 when he had CeeDee, Cooper, and Shultz, Dak has always had one of the higher percentages into tight coverage of all QB’s.

Yet the numbers show Dak has the highest percentage of tight window throws in the league. So I don't think you know what Dak does and doesn't do.

Just wonder what he is really thinking here.

lol. Dez didn’t decline under Dak. Dez declined because Dez decided he didn’t need to work on his route running. And once his body started to fail, because he didn’t have route running to fall back on he started failing. Show me his stats after he left Dallas to prove me wrong…..also. Love Dez. But it’s a fact he didn’t care about route running.

The problem is, Dak will be fighting his inherent instinct to be overly cautious. Best case scenario is he will override that instinct and chuck it, but there will always be a conscious element to that decision making so he will always be a tick late and a yard off.
The bigger the moment, the more pronounced this will be.

Different movie, same ending.
Maybe. Maybe not. Let's hope Dak works on his overly cautious instincts and trusts his new receiver's ability to win 1-vs-1 matchups.

I hope they not just spend extra time in camp, or on their own but I hope they have Dak play in preseason games to get in rhythm a little bit.

Early in Dak's career...

Later in his career...

Yeah, it all looks good until the pressure is on and Dak starts throwing wild.
Then there will be posts on here about how Pickens is running the routes wrong and how big of a bust he is.

He already did with Gallup. It's like none of you actually have watched the games the last several years.

We need Kitna back in his ear to tell him to "let it rip"!!
He needs somebody, I don't understand why he's left alone on the bench....move the QB coach's azz down from the pressbox. This is one reason why HCs shouldn't call the game, takes away from him being a team leader and managing the flow of the game.
