Everyone including the Joneses would love for Pickens to reach elite status but calling him a WR1 before he’s played his first down for the team in a contract year is opening up a tough negotiation with him if he does have a big year. If we lose him in free agency we only get a 5th comp pick.

Why you say we would only get a fifth round?
If he signs a contract similar to lamb as you suggested in your post I'm pretty sure we will get a comp picked number third or fourth round.

If he gets anywhere beyond $21 million a year he should be a 3rd round pick. This year the line between a 3rd or 4th was $20 million area.

I don't think it has anything to do with like or dislike or fear. It has more to do with people having seen this particular movie before.

IMO, his money will depend on his performance and behavior, not what we called him in May. But I acknowledge I could be wrong.

This crossed my mind, but thought I might be confusing it with baseball, where a player traded mid season can’t be tagged with a qualifying offer (it restricts them for the non MLB followers).

Where were these type of moves when the rest of the roster was actually ready to win?

It’s essentially proof that Jerry will do what’s necessary to stay “relevant” but not to get over the hump…and/or can’t recognize where his roster is realistically at.

IMO, his money will depend on his performance and behavior, not what we called him in May. But I acknowledge I could be wrong.

Better question yet….if he has a big year, and his addition clearly sends the offense to a higher level (which can I see happening), how exactly do you replace that for 2026? Or do we not care because its all about instant gratification and this team is already sufficiently built for a deep playoff run?

Is this our “all in” year? Is the rest of the roster ready for that? How many times can they get smacked vs the run in a playoff game before they realize that it might be important to fix that? Jerry knew a top fantasy player would excite the fan base and the marketing genius wasn’t wrong.

In a vacuum, Pickens is an upgrade beyond any debate, but for one year….which would be just fine if there weren’t questions abound with too many other parts of the roster….very much including the QBs health, both tackle positions and the middle of the defense.

Maybe I’m just scared to win. Can’t tell. In the end it’s simple…if you’re into winning as many games as possible in 2025, you love the deal….the one made by the same guy who uses the excuse of “more of a long term plan” for his annual pass on free agency.

Same here. I hope being both head coach and playcaller on Sundays doesn’t prove to be too much for him.

But I’m excited for what the assistant coaches he’s hired might do.

"We both 1's," Lamb told reporters at Cardinals QB Kyler Murray's charity softball event over the weekend. "It ain't no A/B, none of that. You look over there, you see one, you look over here, you see another one. So do what you've got to do with that."

If the Cowboys can get WR1 production from both Lamb and Pickens in 2025, then their offense will get the boost that the front office was looking for when discussing who they wanted to line up on the opposite side of the field from Lamb.

It will end up as an outstanding trade IF the quarterback/receivers communication becomes and remains solid AND the partnership makes defenses pay on as many offensive possessions as possible.

Right. We can have all the talent in the universe...but if we dont; call the right plays and execute them...it doesn't matter.

We have had a lot of good talent here in Dallas over the years. And failed to take advantage.

I'm not getting sucked in until they show me they can ...er..."put it together".
