Terrence Steele's calling card has always been is run blocking, but his pass protection has to improve or he will find himself off this roster. However, he will be given every opportunity to succeed, but he may have reached his peak potential.

Last season he gave up 9 sacks and 37 pressures. He was ranked 91st out of 138 Tackles last season in pass protection. A rating of 58. Lane Johnson for example didn't give up a single sack and had a rating 88. Steele's running blocking grade was 15th. His breakout season was pretty much the same, a top 10 run blocker and a bottom half pass protector.

You can protect a Tackle with a TE chipping or staying in to block, but that affects the entire offense, especially with a LT in his developmental stage.
 
Those pass blocking numbers are horrendous. I knew it was bad, but didn't realize to that extent. hoping against hope having a stud guard next to him helps, but not holding my breath

I agree. He needs to step up and also may need competition.

I hope.the Oregon OT is NFL ready and a polished player that can push for reps at RT.

Martin probably was Steele’s biggest issue last season. He improved dramatically after Martin’s injury.
 
He will be here this year and start because of his contract.

The opportunity for an out is after this season when as a post 6/1 release it’s a 14m cap savings, with of course 4m and 5m in dead money for 26 and 27 respectively.

Another great call Jerry….then make guys like Lamb and Parsons fight and wait. You’re NOT good at this. Just because you can make millions at will in the business world doesn’t help that.

I think Steele was cooked last year. people point to his improved play, but we also played some bottom feeding defenses....he has zero lateral mobility and consistently gets beat, and because of that he tends to bend too far and lose leverage even more.

Martin had nothing to do with the DE's and OLB's making him a turnstyle. he has had more than enough time to recover.
His lateral agility was never great which was why he was a UDFA.
Now its worse than ever.
 
Especially in the first half of the season you could almost call it - if there wasn't a TE to chip he was gonna get beat, and sometimes even with help.

The best thing to do would be to put Guyton at RT. Maybe Steele can play RG or backup.

I guess we'll see how it goes.

Doubt he gets significantly better in pass protection. He is a hard worker who busts his butt. All credit to him for that.

But he is limited athletically and always has been. It’s why he was UDFA.

He is what he is.

I think it had less to do with Martin and more to do with Steele being further removed from his ACL tear. We expect these players to recover and be back at peak form too quickly IMO. Steele struggled for about a year and a half but seemed to be settling back in down the stretch last year. Hopefully, it means we'll see a better performance from him. He's a hardworking player, so I don't doubt he'll be giving us all he can. He's never going to be a perfect pass protector, but he's been better than 9 sacks. He's credited for allowing just one sack in 13 games before his injury in 2022.
 
It is a make or break year for Steele. Just like a contract year. After this year he has 3 more years with a lot of money to be had. He may not see any of it.

He also struggles against power. He is a terrific run blocker, but if he continues to struggles badly in pass protection, he will need to be replaced. Guyton lacks technique, but he has all the physical traits, where Steel is the opposite
