I don't have a problem with James. That said, I really like Blue as well. My biggest issue with James is the cost they spent to go get him.

I kinda feel like drafting a guy like Devin Neal would have been a better choice.

Can someone sell me on James over a guy like Neal?

He was picked in the 5th so can’t really be a reach. Shotty knows him well so I’m guessing he spoke for him

Overview

James flashes speed but has never really developed the recognition and response talent to chalk up playmaking production. He has some twitch in his movement and does a nice job of working past blocks, but he might not be able to anticipate with enough consistency to play ahead of NFL blocking schemes. James is athletic in space and can play special teams, but he might never be more than an average backup.

Strengths

  • Scrapes quickly with rapid-fire slide steps.
  • Weaves around traffic in pursuit of the football.
  • Plays downhill and physically.
  • Uses hands and body-turn to fight around blocks.
  • Elusive and urgent as a blitzer.
  • Four-phase special teams experience.

Weaknesses

  • Tackle production does not stand out (165 in three seasons).
  • Below-average instincts and diagnosing quickness.
  • Inconsistent to see past blocks and key the play.
  • Shallow angles in pursuit leave him short.
  • Failure to wrap up ball-carrier leads to misses.

He's in the 5th round. Probability says he won't even make the 53.

Absolutely.

That head scratching pick that the Cowboys like to make.

I heard somewhere (I can't remember where) that when the Cowboys interviewed Shemar James that he didn't know what basic keys to look for in reading the defense. So they think he is someone that will blossom with pro coaching.
That’s interesting. He was a green dot guy at Florida so that’s interesting to read

But trading up when a guy like Neal was still available baffles me. Devin Neal and Blue would have been a great combo. I read somewhere that they were planning on drafting Neal but the Saints beat us to the punch so we drafted Mafah instead.

Not saying I don't like Mafah. But Neal is going to be at least decent to good..

I really like the Cornelius pick. I guess I'm just trying to get excited about James

Someone said he's a BLITZING LB, yet Eberflus rarely blitzes
About 24% blitzes, so not exactly rare.

This reminds me of Devin Harper .. scratching my head...like why trade up?

He's less athletic than Harper. Runs a 4.69 40, so basically 4.7.

Has he been around for five years now? He's a linebacker and is not untalented or untrainable. He is liked in house. I'll just watch and pay attention...and not all in a single snap shot.

I agree that they shouldn't have traded up for James, but I can't call him a reach as a fifth-rounder. There may have been others players I would have taken, but I can't really say anyone taken at that point is a reach. I would have just kept and used the extra pick to take more shots at getting lucky.

Scheme fit is how you end up with Taco Charlton instead of T.J.Watt.
You draft the best talent. Worry about scheme fit later.
Every freaking team in the league drafts RBs that fit their scheme over ones who don't. It would not make any sense to draft a guy not capable of playing outside zone if that is the style you are going to implement.

A talented RB can play any scheme you put him in.
