Chargers reporter says what Cowboys fans already knew about Trey Lance

We can agree to disagree on McCarthy… If he wanted to be there, under Jerry’s terms, he still would be
And you believe Jerry wanted him? You saw him put his whole staff on one year deals and that wasn’t an indication they didn’t want him? Or the fact that typically if Jerry wants a player or coach he’s been able to retain them lol?

This is a pivot. My post pointed out the article's generalization of fans was incorrect.

You are correct about the NFL is quarterback starved. This thread is about Trey Lance. Here is another example of teams' attempt to satiate their quarterback needs--especially depth at the position.

Joe Flacco spent 11 seasons in Baltimore. Then he went to Denver. Then to the Jets. The Browns basically signed him off his couch. He was with Indianapolis last season. Flacco has bounced from team-to-team due to teams' hoping to strengthen their quarterback bench.

Let's get back to your making a parallel of Jerry Jones' actions as general manager to Joe Hortiz's. Additionally, 'boosting' your opinion mentioning Jim Harbaugh also.

Hortiz and Harbaugh collectively (link) acquired Trey Lance to compete at the position. I doubt Lance will successfully challenge Justin Herbert (personally I do not believe he has a chance in hell), but this move by the Chargers is typical (pro and college) Harbaugh.

Mike McCarthy (and Jones) never placed Lance in any position to compete at quarterback. In any capacity. Not even pretend competition. I have always speculated it was never Jones' intention for Lance to compete against Dak Prescott. My opinion has always been Jones acquired Lance to eventually succeed Prescott if he permanently lost Prescott at some point over the short-term.

No GM is perfect. Howie Boseman is not perfect. More power to Hortiz taking a chance on Lance but his actions to secure Lance was planned between Harbaugh and himself. Jones went Lone Wolf and grabbed Lance, without much input from McCarthy.

I have no idea where Hortiz's career will take him. It may soar. It may go down in flames. I would take Hortiz's insight, accumulated over DECADES of real NFL experience BEFORE being named as a GM, taking over Jones' GM position YESTERDAY.
TLDR :muttley:

The article's title is factually incorrect. Some Cowboys fans already knew about Trey Lance before the Mad Genius claimed him from San Francisco. And stated it on this forum at the time when the trade was orchestrated.
I would almost say most.

Just skimming over it, if you're trying to flex, San Diego Chargers haven't they had the same owner for decades on decades and how many GMs have they had?

so, We can flex back that way, all right we're still trying to say Jerry is the worst GM in the league he can't fire himself, so nothing ever changes.

HMM, so tell me how constantly changing coaches, quarterbacks, moving the team back and forth, and new gm's how many times, have helped the San Diego Chargers, we'll just leave it right here...

This is one impressive resume from this owner and team that been here since 1970 merger, but hey you'll probably come back with saying maybe this time they finally you'll get it right maybe perhaps hopefully we're praying we have our fingers crossed..LOL.
.
TBH Jerry's done more since 1989 just by himself as the Cowboys owner, not using the Cowboys history ,than the San Diego Chargers since 1970 but sure flex their new head coach and GM because just maybe this time it'll happen....

The San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers have not won any Super Bowls. They have appeared in one Super Bowl, Super Bowl XXIX, but lost to the San Francisco 49ers.
  • 1980 AFC Championship: Lost to the Oakland Raiders.
  • 1981 AFC Championship: Lost to the Cincinnati Bengals.
  • 1994 AFC Championship: Defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning their first and only AFC Championship.
  • 2007 AFC Championship: Lost to the New England Patriots.
Wow what a flex a team that's far worse in both historic and recent history of doing anything in the playoffs, squat nothing nada,

so sure maybe this time it'll work but that's the funny thing around here is the irony of Jerry doesn't do things traditionally well you know what I watched traditional teams struggle they're all over the NFL and I bet your response is at least start trying to get better no they've been trying to find quarterbacks and GM's and the right mix for decades they can't do either some teams can't even find a quarterback.

So I'm not even bothering with this because I don't really care about the Chargers I don't care about Trey Lance and I especially don't care what people think about our ownership and our GM because most of the narratives are wrong yes Jerry is falling as short yes the Cowboys are in a drought but I watched so many examples of teens who do it exactly the way fans want it done here and they get nowhere absolutely nowhere..

I mean sure at least the Lions finally after 70 years of futility finally found the right mix and they still failed to get to the Super Bowl they keep adding and adding talent they have everything the right way and they're still falling short.

It just shows it's really tough to do what the old Cowboys have done with dynasties to do what New England has done and currently to do what Kansas City has done and by the way Kansas City took 56 years to get back and win a Super Bowl they finally get back on track these always lead back here I get it we're frustrated you all want to hate on Jerry as much as possible so you want to say what he did with Trey Lance is so different than what others have done no San Francisco made the big mistake traded up three 1st round picks to get him so Jerry gets mocked for using a 4th round pick on him and now you make excuses for the other team who picked him up even though everybody knows he's garbage..

I have to say that's an odd flex and it just gives me humor to get me up in the morning and Snicker thank you, court Jester....:muttley::popcorn:

The difference is the Chargers got him for nothing but a simple 1 yr. $2 million contract. The Cowboys gave up a 4th round pick. After the 49ers gave up on him it should have been obvious Lance was a long, long shot. But I am not that torn up about it. A fourth round pick is not too much to give up on a former 1st round QB who was still young and inexperienced.

You were correct initially; IMO it was mostly Mike McCarthy. If he had demanded Trey Lance as the quarterback and moved on from Cooper Rush, who I believe was merely progress stopper, Lance would have likely seen more time on the field. I agree that it was mistaken to trade a fourth-round pick for a player they didn't even use. but please act as though Mike McCarthy lacks authority—especially last year everything was going wrong. As a lame duck coach, he could have went against Jerry's wishes, knowing he was likely to be fired anyway. So why not challenge Jerry by starting Trey Lance for entire season after Prescott's injury?

If McCarthy had intentionally created this drama, it would have fascinated to see if Jerry got exposed for forcing McCarthy to play Cooper Rush. I would need to see this in writing because I don't believe it for a minute. Based on how I've seen McCarthy misused many players, fail design offensive plays, and neglect players with unique skills that could enhance the struggling offense, he was terrible at that. Like Garrett, he seemed to favor veterans, trusting them over younger players, possibly as a strategy to retain his job rather than using the remainder of the as an experimental opportunity for Lance and others.

That's my perspective on that matter. but to attribute it to Jerry Jones, but there's no evidence he interferes with decisions about who plays and who doesn't. Last year would have been an ideal for McCarthy to challenge. What would have happened? he have been fired mid-season? All he needed to do is bring it to the public's attention, perhaps through social media, that he being forced to play Cooper Rush. That would have made headlines, exposing Jerry for allegedly dictating usage.

However, there is no proof that Jerry meddles in game-day roster decisions, and that remains unsubstantiated...

Cowboys didn’t even try to develop Lance….no reason at all for Rush to be getting playing time over him.
They were still in playoff contention when Dak went down. You dont go into tank mode when you are still in playoff contention. Playing Lance would officially be tank mode

The NFL would have done an investigation if the Cowboys propped Lance out there as a starter. The tank job would have been to obvious. We would have been better to call up Woody Dantzler out of retirement and ask him to switch back to QB.
Dallas was so injured (and cheap) they had every reason to just go with the kids.
It was an insanely dumb decision, and I am as anti-tank any anyone alive.
But its detrimental to yourselves to play vets you know you won't resign over kids.
The R4 pick in trade was all they needed to justify the decision to go lose out with Trey.

Dallas should have fired Mike mid-season, installed Schotty and told him to start Lance and develop kids under contract long term.
Tell him do those things and the perm job is his.

No, they really weren't.
They were ok record-wise but anyone watching saw them get beat by 30 versus any legit playoff team.
They knew they weren't going to make the playoffs when Dak went down.
Mike wasnt going to tank because he needed a job after the season.
So, they clawed with all they had and thus drafted 12th like a chump.
I sure would be sleeping easier had they drafted Membou and secured LT for a decade.
Let Guyton develop at a back up/swing OT and position him to take over for Steele.

This sounds all to familiar to Cowboys fans.

The Dallas Cowboys made a gamble when they sent a fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers for quarterback Trey Lance. It was seen as a worthwhile investment in a potential lottery ticket, but it didn't take long to come to the realization that Lance wouldn't pan out.

Lance signed a one-year pact with the Chargers this offseason following a two-year stint with the Cowboys. The former No. 3 overall pick is hoping to get his career off the ground, but he will have to prove himself under a hard-nosed head coach like Jim Harbaugh.

Unfortunately for Lance, his performance in offseason workouts has left something to be desired. The following quote from The Athletic's Daniel Popper will sound familiar to Cowboys fans.

Enjoy watching JM try to learn how to throw in OTAs this Summer.

6 seasons of NCAA and still cant throw.

You could be right. My thoughts go immediately to fans, who pay attention to the league as a whole. To those individuals who know Trey Lance's backstory of the 49ers throwing the kitchen sink at him in the draft. Of how they jettisoned him as soon as they surmised Brock Purdy was their better investment as a starter.

I could be wrong. However, I do not believe 'most' fits what I just described.

I believe Lance gets a per game bonus.

Deal is worth up to 6M

They were 3 and 5 when Dak went down but I wasn’t saying do it then. I was saying do it at some point…. Not week 17…..
