Mailbag: Differences in defensive scheme? - Nick Eatman & Tommy Yarrish, DallasCowboys.com

Matt Eberflus will do things a little differently than Dan Quinn.

At this point, what differences are you seeing (or hearing) between the Dan Quin defensive scheme and the Matt Eberflus scheme?David Fedak/Leonardo, NJ
Tommy:
I think the biggest difference between the two is that Dan Quinn’s style creates more pressure on the quarterback, while Eberflus’ defense is more based on stopping the run and forcing turnovers. Not to say that each of them can’t do the other, but there’s more of an emphasis on those aspects at their core which creates a big difference.
Under Quinn, the Cowboys struggled at times to stop the run. Can that change under Matt Eberflus? It’s certainly one of the reasons why they hired him to return to Dallas and call the defense, but my bigger question would be if they currently have the personnel to be able to stop the run. Especially at defensive tackle, I don’t know if they do yet, meaning they’ll have to rely a lot on their EDGE rushers and linebackers to stop the run.

So his focus is stopping the run or it's been KNOWN that he wants to do that. I'm sure none of us are seeing this right now, partially with the drafting of JT but why not get another big beefy body in here to help stop the run. We could have started this out earlier when it was FA

I don't think Eberflus necessarily believes you have to have a bunch of beefy bodies to stop the run. He believes in assignment-sound football. If you are constantly stunting and you have players playing hero ball, they get caught out of position and teams can break off runs through the gaps. He believes in his DTs attacking their gaps and keeping the linebackers clean to make plays against the run by being where they are supposed to be. He also plays a lot of nickel and Cover 3 and believes in the corners, especially the slot, being a strong run defender on the outside.

One reason I believe they are considering Bland and Thomas in the slot is because of the responsibilities of that position. It plays a lot of underneath coverage, but also attacks the run.

Now, that does make the defense more limited against the pass. It does not use a lot of stunts and blitzes to create pressure but relies on its front four to win their matchups. Quinn believed in whatever it takes to create pressure, even at the sacrifice of run defense. Eberflus believes in forcing the QB to hold the ball a tick longer and giving his pass rushers a chance to get home. That works when you have multiple pass rushers who can get the job done. If you don't, offenses will double- and triple-team Micah and limit the effectiveness of our pass rush.

I will not be surprised at all if the defense is effective against the run, because Eberflus's defenses have been. To do that, it sacrifices creativity against the pass.

The Cowboys defense is built to play with a lead.

You can connect the dots from there.
That was Dan Quinn you have no idea what this defense is going to do or how it's built until we get to see it play at full speed whatever roster they come up with we'll get to see it first hand and then we can decide what it's built for...

I get what you're saying that the pass rush might be the strength and we be better with the lead but I prefer to wait to put a label on this defense since we haven't even seen one game yet...

That might all be true and that might happen but the problem here is they're not going to be able to rely on their corners early some of that is coming back in game 5 so they better hold on until Diggs Butler and Overshown get back...

I mean look at how the defense looked so horrible last year until some key players got back parsons and overshone playing together was big but early on this team is going to be shorthanded on defense especially on the back end...

Yeah can't have the best of both worlds, but hey i'll take that!!!

I think with the pass rushers we have, maybe we can get some pressure without having to do anything special!!

Micah
Sam Williams
Fowler
EZ
Kneeland

Feel like i'm missing someone important

Overshown , when he returns, could be beat at off the ball LB creating havoc up the middle and chasing plays down. It is definitely a group that won't need to blitz.. That will help keep guys in gaps and help the run game even if they're not the best at it they can add focus to the run game because they don't need to blitz to create pressure...

The only other one I can think of is Payton Turner, but he hasn't been much of a pass rusher. Neither has Kneeland, but he's young and could develop some in that area. I think the effectiveness of our pass rush is going to depend on if Fowler can produce what he did last year, if Williams can be more effective than he was before his injury and if Eze is everything we hope to be, along with Odig and Thomas being able to win inside matchups consistently. Micah can't be a one-man show in a defense that isn't liable to move him around as much to create favorable matchups.

I think they said the only blitzing that Eberflus likes to do is maybe CB blitzes, either way i'm not a fan of blitzing, I feel like there's too much left at stake when you don't get to the QB and the Qb ends up making a play by beating the blitz

Talk about a happy camper when we resigned Fowler back, I was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy!!!

..bro, very interesting tidbits. Informative. I like it. Let me know, where I can send you Cowboy donuts... ;)..

Well, part of the reason that Eberflus uses a lot of Cover 3 is because your corners don't have to be superstars to make the scheme work. It limits the outside corners to not having to chase receivers all over the field. Of course, as with any zone scheme, there are holes in the coverage that the quarterback can exploit if he is given enough time.

I think one of the reasons that Eberflus is considering Bland for the slot is because of the responsibilities of the corners in Cover 3. He feels they can get away with lesser players at the outside spots, but has to have a star in the slot.

But definitely, the better the players, the better the coverage, so it will be interesting to see if what we've got can hold up until the calvary arrives. If the outside corners can't handle the more simplified job the scheme gives them, then it all unravels.

Thanks. I've tried to read up on the scheme. There may be some things I've missed in trying to sum it up, but this is what I believe we can expect. Eberflus might tweak it some for the personnel we've got, but I believe he pretty much believes in just running his scheme without exceptions. You start making exceptions, you create weak spots in the chain that can be exploited.

I agree. I think we see him mainly as a pass-down player and won't have him at end in running situations. The reason Washington didn't re-sign him IMO is because while he had 10 sacks, he can be a liability against the run.

One of our main issues might be that we seem to have pass rushers who are questionable against the run and run defenders who are questionable against the pass. That's not that unusual, but one reason offenses pass when a run might be expected is to take advantage of personnel mismatches. If we have Kneeland, Turner, Mazi and Toia in the game, for instance, it would make more sense to pass than to try to run against that front.

We don't have two many DL who are great against both the pass and run.
