Would it cost too much to rent Gilly for a year?

I'll be honest, this is the first I've heard that he didn't play well last year. I'm not saying I don't believe you though.....
I think he was serviceable last year, but nothing like we remember him in Dallas when he was playing well, although even then we saw some warts in his physical game that he was mostly able to cover up with his experience. Two years later if he has continued to decline physically it could be really bad news...

Not saying its the end all be all, but here are his PFF grades from last year. PFF certainly isnt perfect, but they do at least review every snap. 117/222 CBs in a coverage grade likely explains why teams are not rushing out to sign him before camp..

Per NFL+ last year he was

Games - 15
Snaps - 818 (73rd most among DBs)
Yards allowed - 520 (30th most among DBs)

Going off yards allowed can be dangerous to evaluate a CB on alone as one bad play can really skew those numbers if they give up a deep ball, but paired with the PFF grade it seems to give a fairly consistent indicator of his play. Minnesota also recorded a top 10 pressure rate in the league so it wasn't like their DBs suffered from a lack of pass rush ability from their DL either. Still, if a guy is 73rd in snaps you'd like him to be around there or lower in his ranking of yards allowed.

Cost no but they have a lot invested in the position so I doubt they bring him in.

He is an insurance card for the Cowboys. If we get to Labor day and it looks like we need a CB, his name will be on the short list. You never know who might get cut and who could be available however.
He could also easily picked up by another team.

I know Stephon Gilmore has been linked to the Cowboys and a few others. He would probably be too expensive. I know he's 34 but he's played well as of late. I like the way he plays....He got 7m last year with Vikings with bonuses up to 10M.
Are those legit links ? . .. or are those just hopeful Wish Lists among fans and media ..?

If Gilly is really that valuable and that good .. (which the CB role is) .then why is Gilly still on the streets ?

I thought he was a liability in 23 and now it’s 2025. He would be ok for depth though.

Then we go to the next name on the list. Gilly is just a familiar name at this point. He hasn't been anywhere close to "special" the last couple of years.

His stats in 2023 were near Pro Bowl level. His 2024 was a bit below league average. But a decline like that at his age, you have to expect continued regression

We will not add anyone special. At best GM Jethro will add someone serviceable, if anyone at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's signed at some point, possibly later, in training camp. It's not unheard of for aged vets to want to skip most, if not all, of training camp before signing with a team.

His speed is likely gone.

He was playing a lot of trail technique here.

If the defense was closer to being a real contender a guy like Gilmore would be a great addition and the money would be easy enough to work.

He is not going to put this defensive over the top though so I'd pass and focus on seeing what I had and adding youth and potential if necessary.
Same thoughts.

Rather keep a youngster and develop.

I can tell you right now our DBs will need his services. No more waiting to sign Gilmore. How can they need to evaluate our players before securing his availability. It's obvious to me.

He's one of those vets who could possibly sign after camp, doesn't want to do camp. I think we look at how things progress in our CB room, if they're not looking good early in camp, he still could get a call early

Cowboys can’t afford Hendrickson with Parsons about to sign in about nine weeks. Eagles can’t afford him with Carter about to sign in nine months. The Commanders can afford him, though.
This would be the only, most likely scenario, for Micah to be willing to take less money and possible the same for Hendrickson.

We are still $30+ under the cap, so it is possible, but it would cause some challenges in the immediate future.
