Depends on what other coaches do during the year. If quite a few come out of nowhere, he;ll fall where he falls. He'd have to win the division at least to get top 3 consideration, IMO.

If he had a new deal he could risk playing somewhat injured. I wouldn't play with a back injury that could get far worse and cost me hundreds of millions.

I don't think he wants to be put on IR. I just don't think he wants to play on a one-year deal where an injury can ruin his career without much of a guarantee. I think he's looking for a doctor to excuse him so he can be paid while he waits for this to be resolved without taking any risks.

I agree that it is a ploy, but not a season-ending one, just a season-delaying one to try to force a deal or a trade.
