Parsons is obviously the best defender on the Cowboys and makes a case for being the best defender in the NFL.
On the other hand there are many superior level defenders in the NFL. How many NFL defensive players would you consider to be in the same tier level as Parsons. It is not limited to Parsons’ position. The other players can play any position as long as it’s on defense.
Now think about this: Is Parsons likely to perform better than a majority of that group over the next 5 years and how many new players will arrive that will escalate to Parsons’ tier and how many of those player will Parsons likely out perform?
When you look at this situation though this lens from my point of view the probability that paying Parsons to be the top defender in the league doesn’t look like a winning cap strategy.
I think we have seen what Parsons is able to do. I dont expect that he will ever live up to his advertised talent. I honestly also dont believe he is a generational talent.
Parsons is a very good player. But there it ends. He hasnt developed any kind of change in his approach of play. He still gets destroyed by double teams like he was as a rookie for instance.
He doesnt have the stamina to be a force for a full game. And he greatly diminishes after half of the season. After 3 years of watching the same problems i think its fair to assume that wont change in the future. He also proved more than once that he isnt able to be a factor against real good competition (playoffs). He has all the stats but he is not a game changer. And for sure not in meaningful games. But thats what makes one difference between a great and a very good player
He is a great passrusher but lacks badly in other skills: run stopping and coverage. He excells when he is allowed to exclusivley rush the passer. But then with the said limitations i talked about in my previous paragraph.
Whats more is he tends to withraw and to check out of games if he isnt able to get to the QB or our team is losing badly. His level of frustration seems to be very low and he doesnt act up to his age. The guy is not a fighter and no leader, more of a fellow traveler.
Without the advertised talent and only judging by what i have seen from him so far i would say there are at least 20 defensive players better than him. In an overall list i would say he is somewhere in the lower 50s or 60s.
