Schottenheimer: Blue has to be more consistent to play in games

Ace......Blue has to wanna be ready. I am sure teammates and coaches would love nothing more than to see Blue show enough that they can't keep off the field. For coaches, not to even dress him for a game is about as strong a message as they come.

In fact, I doubt they are going to make him inactive every week. Just my take but I think he has maybe a few more games to either earn his way on the field or he could be released and signed to PS.

No way you release him. Someone else will swoop in and pick him up right away. He's too talented.

Something is going on behind closed doors, because Blue made it obvious he was so happy to be a Dallas Cowboy. I have a feeling it's the RBs coach said or is doing something that is upsetting Blue. That's what I think.

If Blue can't consistently pick up the correct blitzer or chip on the correct defender, he cannot play RB in the NFL. For a RB, one blown assignment can result in a sack, a turnover, or losing your starting QB to injury.

Idk about his excuse but i dont even dare to imagine how bad Blue really is if he isnt able to beat out our current set of starting RBs.

I wouldn't put a ton of stock in the thinking that he's so much worse. Coaches, especially early, tend to give veterans way more leeway than rookies. So it could be a case where Blue was close to Sanders but Schotty went with the vet.

Bit him in the *** as Sanders very possibly cost us the game.

Maybe he is often time lining up in the wrong place pre-snap and ending up in the wrong location post snap. Aka maybe not pass blocking correctly. He will hopefully get better with time.

Pass blocking is really important

He really shouldn't be on this roster. He's shot. Go trade for a TB like Philly did if you have no faith in Blue.

Rookies generally struggle in that since many didn’t have to in college. Just work him in slowly.

Free agents freshly signed by Jerry must be played before a 5th round rookie player.

To do the opposite is to admit a mistake in signing said player.

Give the situation time until it becomes untenable before the mistake can be released.

It sounds to me like he has been consistent? Just what he said? That doesn't imply laziness or lack of motivation. That's just reading into it. It could certainly be true but that's not what was said and jumping to conclusions just makes people look foolish.
As far as I'm concerned it could be he's just not talented enough to take it to the next level. It's one thing to flash it's another to do it on a down by down basis. Extrapolating that to laziness just sounds like everyone can do it if they just try hard enough.
On the other hand, sometimes people just hit their stride at different times.

Schottenheimer said it himself during training camp. He something like immaturity issues; although, I don't recall the exact wording.

Exactly, I don’t know if it’s laziness, maturity, or a learning issue, but the primary takeaway is there is an issue.

Just like when the Stretch Smith comments came to light this summer, I don't see why people are so automatically defensive of these players. It's not as if it's unheard of for young rookies to not "get it" right away. It doesn't mean he's a worthless human being, a bum, or any of that. He can learn to do better and probably will. It just takes some guys more time and some hard coaching to figure it out.

The bottom line with young RBs is that if you are not a first round stud drafted to be handed the rock 20 times a game then you're a rotational/role player. For Blue, that means he plays the change of pace and 3rd down back role. In that role your primary responsibilities are catch the ball and keep the QB from getting beheaded. Both of those require you know what the hell you are supposed to do 100 out of 100 times. If you aint showin that then you aint playin because there is no way the coaching staff is going to let a guy who doesn't know which defender he is supposed to pick up get the 60 million dollar a year QB hurt. Us Cowboy fans saw that movie back in 2010 when Gronkowski whiffed on a block and cost Romo the rest of the season. I don't need to see it again. I also don't need to see an undersized guy with fumbling problems rushed out there to appease the fans. If the kid aint ready then he aint ready. His time will come. But he's gonna have to earn it. Which is fine by me.

And then they get cut or they rarely get on the field. Why? Because they can't block, either because they're bad at it or because they can't be trusted to know their assignments and carry them out every single time. Guys who can run the ball are a dime a dozen, but if you can't block, you can't play. Similarly, if you can't catch, then you'd better be incredible at running and blocking or you're not worth it.

They trust the other guys to know their assignments and to block. They don't trust Blue to do the same. It's very simple.

I've never understood why people here thought that a 5th round rookie would come in here and set the world on fire. If he was THAT type of back, he would NOT have lasted until the fifth round.

I just don't agree with this logic.

I think most would agree that the Baltimore Ravens have a pretty deep roster, yet somehow they had 3 UNDRAFTED guys make the 53.

The commodes 7th round RB had a big impact week 1 btw.

Teams have proven over time that a lot of them suck really bad at drafting.

Oh, so Turpin can have special packages but Blue can’t? I watched his every game at Texas, he isn’t incompetent. He does make an occasional boneheaded play but he is more than capable to play 10 or so snaps a game. I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes though.
