Make no mistake, though: McCarthy is following the Cowboys. He and Jones stay in contact, and McCarthy has kept tabs with his former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who unexpectedly vaulted to the top spot when his boss left.

“He’s done a great job of preparing himself for this opportunity,’’ McCarthy says. “He’s presented everyone in that building a clear vision of what he wants to get done and how he wants to go about it. He’s going to be upbeat every day. He 100 percent has a positive approach.

"I’ve heard only good things about what he’s done.’’

His assessment on the trade: “From the Dallas perspective, they are a young football team and this gives them a lot of draft capital moving forward. Kenny Clark––I’m not trying to compare him to Micah because he plays a different position, and I’m not saying he’s a better person––but he’s a stud of a man. From Day 1, when we had him in Green Bay, he was a top-notch person. I think the world of him."

“That’s a really good locker room in Dallas, and Kenny is a really good fit. That and two No. 1 picks…I know there is a long-term component that Dallas probably doesn’t want to talk about with this trade, but I think they should feel good about that."

“As for Micah, he goes to a young team and another great organization. He can reach all of the goals he wants to reach as a player and a teammate. He’s in a great spot.’’

So who will win on Sunday night? McCarthy won’t go there. But he knows what he’ll keep an eye on–and what he expects from the Cowboys.

“As a coach, you’re always analyzing it,’’ he says. “That’s how we’re wired for viewing football. It’s the way we’re trained. I’ll be watching individuals.

“There are people you root for in this business. That’s one thing about the Cowboys. I spent five years with those men. I have a lot of love for the players and coaches still there.

“I just believe the Cowboys are going to continue to get better.’’

NFL schedules are regimented, and McCarthy has maintained that structure even during his period of transition. He believes it’s critical to stay in that mode, to stay prepared for his return to the game next year. “I’m preparing to coach again in 2026,’’ McCarthy says matter-of-factly.

He said a lot in between words about Clark & Micah . Interesting . Very generous comments towards the Cowboys . I never understood why a three year extension wasn’t enough rope . He had already had five with no real post season success here .

No. He wants a better one. Jerry Jones is the kind of GM you work for only if you have no other opportunities.
He may want to brown nose himself to the Mara family. Heard Daboll is dead man walking. I’m sure he’s shut himself in a barn reviewing every Giants game since his removal.

Everything is so great.

And we all feeling great.

Man its just so great.

I feel like ex coaches have to sign an NDA when they leave.

How things play out and happen while they are in the building doesn’t translate to the unicorn and rainbows that every coach seems to talk about when they leave.

I read the article earlier this morning but I don't think McCarthy had anything interesting or insightful to say. Seems like a good guy, but not the guy you go to if you want real inside information. He is tight lipped.
