Rumors ESPN Notes/Rumors on Cowboys and Trades that were discussed

....that's the feel I got last night. Dallas defense will run 5-2-4

One LB to commit and other as hybrid. Hybrid helping the secondary.
Horrible idea. Teams are passing on 60% of plays. This isn't 1985.

What is this "five down linemen" set I keep hearing about? When do they use it?
We ran a 5-2 set in high school. It was basically a 4-3 with a "DOG" OLB who served as a primary rush end with three heavies and a strong-side DE. The defense was designed to create pressure and keep the SAM and WILL ILB's clean. The WILL ILB was the primary playmaker on the second level.

I think this set could work with our current personnel. Clowney/Kneeland at strong-side DE, Clark at Nose and Williams/Osa manning the 3/5 depending on the call, and EZ playing the DOG position. Wilson is the logical fit at WILL, but I question who they would play at SAM. Damone Clark maybe?

Either way it should be interesting to watch. Lots of pressure, but they need to figure out coverage over the middle. Wilson should help and Overshown/Sanborn coming back should plug some leaks.

Dolphins screwed up not getting rid of Chubb and Minkah.
Word is New interim GM raised the prices after the Phillips deal, and teams didn't like that. But, in the offseason those guys could still be moved. Why you say he screwed up?

LOL. Belt is insane.

I like Williams. But him and Wilson don't turn a 3-5-1 team into a 5-2 team down the stretch. You still have a coordinator problem who is gonna still play a ton of zone and watch his defense get shredded through the air.
A zone does work better with a better pass rush. Williams does give us that. I expect improvement and 5-2 isnt completely out of the question with our offensive ability. I am still on the fence, however, if its Eberflus or the players. I think this move will be more telling.

The NFL insider on NFLN said the Cowboys offered the Jets a 1st a mid round pick and a player for Quinnen Williams and the Jets turned it down.

Because the value will be even less in the offseason.

Prime example Cowboys tried to trade Micah for Quinnen and get it done. Months later now they have to settle for a 2027 draft pick.

Is it one-gap or two-gap?

Base scheme was one-gap. Stunts, blitzes, etc created two-gap situations. Keep in mind this was 20+ years ago and our coach was known for being old school even back then. I'm not sure how a similar scheme translates into the modern game. It could prove to be useful as the league moves towards more run-oriented offenses, but gets shaky if the DOG isn't skilled in coverage.

Yeah, I would have liked both of them for the right price as well. This defense has been historically bad, so it's going to take a lot to fix it. I'm not sure two players can, but they can at least possibly help it be better.

Eberflus played quite a bit of 5-2 in our most recent game. I don't think he's agin it. Of course, our man defense collapsed when we did it.

Yeah I think at this point all we can do is hope for average for the time being. I’m still not sure if Eberflus is the guy.

The defensive personnel is horrid especially with the injuries in the secondary. Not one NFL caliber starting LB. Safeties were questionable even with Hooker and Donovan, but Juyaneh and Bell are showing why they were The UDFA’s. CB situation is just as bad. Bland is getting exposed with no pass rush, Diggs is done, Elam is still a former 1st round bust, the rest look like UFL players.

That said, I think Eberflus is mid at best too.
