Would Dak restructure his contract to get defensive help

Everyone likes to act like Tom Brady did this wonderful thing but what they don't realize is he didn't take less money, he simply restructured to free up money for the current year and often times he got paid more upfront money and/or got more money guaranteed.

Most NFL players will gladly restructure because they know one or two things will happen ..

1) they will get some of their future salary paid immediately via "bonus" which gets spread over the remaining years of the contract so the team benefits from more salary cap space
2) they will sometimes get more money added to existing future years which means even more upfront "bonus" money but more importantly more guaranteed money from the same contract

This whole "take less money" story line you hear about star players is never true because the NFLPA would lose their minds if one of their star players took less money because then teams might start asking or even expecting it to happen with more star players, which usually have the largest contracts.

Now, some aging veterans who are about to be cut may take less money to stay with the same team, but a Tom Brady, Dak Prescott, etc. type of contract player is only going to accept less money if it means more guaranteed money overall and the more common result is simply immediate upfront money.

I think he will probably get restructured..

I think a few will to free up some $$

I guess I should say.. I hope they will.

Brady also had a wife that made more money than him.....

Do you think Dak would restructure his contract to help get defensive players like Brady always did
We don't have to go to Dak for this they can do it without him having input, flick the switch, it's built in his contract

This should be the biggest question of the off-season.

Why would he do that when he's going to earn every penny next season when he is better than ever? Just ask him.

"Had, lol. I am privileged to work with the company in Ipanema, Brazil, that distributed her line of Sandals. Her andI shared many stories about Tom back in the day.....

It's sort of true. He only got top of the market money one time.

It's true he didn't strive to be the highest paid and there is admiration in that, but as @Ranching pointed out, at the time his wife had a lot of money as well plus he was making a lot of marketing revenue given his successful career so whatever he left on the table was more than covered by off-the-field deals.

The truth is a player's career can end at any time and if any of us were in their position, we can say we would handle it differently but between the pressure from the NFLPA and the many other players looking for help to raise the market value of new contracts it would be really hard to resist pushing for the max you could get.

Dak has restructured his contract several times help the team smooth out his impact. He’s about to do it again.

Brady did the same with the Pats and the Bucs. Almost every QB does it, as do most players with big contracts. CeeDee will do it this year as well.

What you might he thinking is that prior to his final contract extension (not restructure), Brady didn’t negotiate as hard as he could have and accepted a slightly lower number than he could have demanded. The NFLPA wasn’t very happy.

Dak’s next opportunity to do something like this is after 2028.

Players don’t just tear up their contract and start over midway through unless the team threatens to cut them if they don’t take less money.

There are a couple different wordings here that can confuse people

The Cowboys do not need to ask Dass to restructure his contract to move cap hits around. It’s sort of like a team option thing. They may not even need to tell his agent they’re gonna do it. Dak gets the same money overall, so it’s just creative bookkeeping on Dallas’ part. This allows his cap number to go down and they can sign more people in 2026. Thats a typical restructure everyone does, and that’s why you don’t ever hear about a player rejecting it.

The Cowboys would need to negotiate with Dak’s agent if they wanted him to outright take less money, which is something they’d never ask because he’d never do. The only times this happens is when a player is about to get cut and he knows he won’t even get the pay cut amount in free agency (or he just really wants to stay on that team.)

So should Dallas go ahead and restructure Dak’s contract? Yeah, I would. But the downside is it pushes so much money into the future that Dak would almost need to stay a Cowboy in 2027 and 2028 and would very likely need a new extension to avoid a cap crash year in 2029. But if you think he should get that anyway then there isn’t much downside
