Schefter: Cowboys will put franchise tag on Pickens

Having two WRs at 30 mil+ is not how you team build (see the Bengals). If Dallas was smart, and they’re not, they’d take the Pickens money and sign the top LB and EDGE in free agency. Two first round rookies and a couple of middle to lower tier free agents isn’t saving this D.
Why not? The Eagles did it in one year. They signed Zach Baun, who was a low-tier free agent, and turned him into a Pro Bowler. You don’t need top stars on defense—just better coaching.

That'd be better lol. Didnt realize you get 2 first round picks if you dont match an offer.
It would be tough not to take 2 first. Obviously only a good team woukd pay that much but back to back years having an extra first rnd pick is huge

I know I am a minority on this, but I'm standing by what I have said.......Pickens will sign a long-term deal before March 3.
Thats possible. I don’t if they get it done that fast but I think they definitely want to keep him

You don't have to like it but no you really shouldn't be pissed about it. It's part of the CBA. It's been around since the beginning of free agency.
No, if you’re Pickens you want Jerry to negotiate a long term deal with his agent. Pickens will probably not sign the tag. You CBA guys are comical. Always defending management.

Yup, but we've got Jerry and Cap Boy running things.

I think the Jones Boys cost the cap $15 ish million by being stupid and not signing Pickens early in the season. It was so predictable.
I still think it's safer to tag him and watch how he reacts to it and behaves during the season. I know costwise, it costs more this season, but I just don't think they should fully trust him yet.

I doubt he’s publicly frustrated until it becomes evident Jerry is getting up to his nasty negotiating tricks and a deal doesn’t look likely.
Pickens is more likely to not be heard from until a deal is done. He will let his agent handle the negotiations. David learned a thing or two from the Micah negotiations. The Cowboys are under pressure to get this deal done. All Pickens has to do is chill out.

I don't think he'll sign it until he has to. Why would he? You sign it and you give up any leverage in negotiations.

However, he'll sign it by July 15 because if it reaches the deadline, there's nothing else that can be done other than holding out and missing a season and $28 million. Obviously, the hope and urgency for his side will be getting a long-term deal done.

Pickens always was going to play out the season. That was said when he got traded. Pickens was barely a $20 million a year receiver before he was traded, now he is 30+. Smart move by him and his agent. Pickens isn’t Ferguson or Bland. He knows he is a top flight talent.

Please don't stretch this out until the deadline for more press and attention.

No one wants to hear the "we plan on working toward a long-term deal with George Pickens. It takes two to tango" constant Cowboys headlines crap.

Are we gonna do this again this year ? I'm no Jones fan. I can't stand him and his fat son. But you can't just "sign Pickens early in the season". Pickens and his agent want to maximize his dollars. There is no chance he was signing a cheaper deal.
Yes, Jerry and Stephen are idiots. Yes they have no clue how to build a good team. But they also can't magically force a player to sign a cheap deal.

This is where I am but as I mentioned in another thread, IMO Jerry's tone seems to suggest he's going to get this thing done ASAP.

Week 4 a 3 year $85-90 million deal would have been gobbled up. You know this.

Well, cost is definitely the main reason to get something done. He'll cost about a third against the cap as he will with the tag. Plus, Jerry and Stephen have a history of bad contracts (for various reasons), so it would not surprise me at all if we give one to Pickens.

I still think Pickens was playing this whole season as a good soldier. No complaints about $$. Very productive. Worked hard and bet on himself. He knew his opportunity would come. Him and his agent wanted to be in this position, right now, this off-season.

It’s the best thing to do right now.You can see how FA and the draft plays out while starting talks. He can be signed anytime before 7/15 I believe, a signing would save about 17M in cap.
