I was born in 1970.

Although most of the western shows and movies were starting to slow down. It was still very popular where there was a LOT of westerns shows or movies on the available tv channels at that time.

I remember coming home from kindergarten and watching the lone ranger which was followed by the ciso kid.

I remember my parents watching a lot of western shows or movies.

It was so big back then. I think it got so over saturated that people got tired of them after some time.

Now you just don't get many western movies. There are some western shows the last few years but they are more modern shows that are basically a western like Longmire and Dark Winds.

I remember I started getting tired of all the westerns when I was young. I wanted to see stuff like Star Wars, Smokey and the bandit and even older godzilla movies. Now I like seeing the newer movies and shows. They are so far and few between that it is a nice treat to see a good western movie.

I know costners last western movie that was going to be a trilogy was over production price and kind of panned and seemed like they cancelled the following movies.

I liked the movie myself...not sure why it was panned other than the possible price of it.

Mackenna's Gold
Lonesome Dove
The Spaghetti Westerns
Once Upon a Time in the West

And then there the many fine Western TV shows, from the 1950's and 1960's.

I recommend the Grit and Grit Plus stations/channels.

It's funny but they don't make many westerns anymore. Sure they make shows like Yellowstone but not many real westerns. In the 50's and early 60s they made tons of western movies, here in the US and also in Italy and Spain.

This topics reminds me how many great westerns were made and how much I really enjoy them.

If you are interested, There are Western movie channels on Pluto TV that play nothing but old westerns. I like to watch the old TV shows lie The Virginian, Tales of Wells Fargo, Wagon Train (the earlier episodes), Lawman and Maverick. Some fun TV there. I think Pluto has a channel dedicated to The Rifleman. LOL.

Easily my very favorite western tv show.

I really love the movie WEST WORLD, with Yul Brunner, but despite its title name, is it a true western movie ?
It also featured medieval time figures and action sequences.(ala black night, queens, etc.) ..so does that take away the movie being a true western ?

I always felt like Rifleman stood the test of time. Watched it when I was a teenager, but very few B&W old TV shows I could stomach.

Alright . . . I am gonna step outside the lines a bit here . . . well, really a lot !

Can any of you envision the movie Avatar as just along a theme of Cowboys and Indians? Even to a point that the natives (the Na'vi) used bows, had "Indian" type battle cries, had communal type living, etc. And the storyline they were fighting invaders trying to take their homelands. Many more parallels also. Yes, the movie is futuristic, includes science fiction, and embodies a fantasy land atmosphere.

Don't label me as crazy, please, even though I have the same surname as Sam the bartender on Gunsmoke.

Also on the "Cowboys and Indians" wording don't crucify me there either. I grew up in the 50's and 60's (born in 1953) so that is not demeaning even though the term "Indian" is technically incorrect.

They call that "Outdated cultural depictions" now. They post this as a warning like violence, nudity, smoking etc. before the shows start.

Yes, I have seen Raquel Welch, Robert Redford, Leonard Nemoy, William Shatner, DeForest Kelly (was in a lot of episodes), Alan Hale Jr. and a bunch of others watching the old Western TV shows. And Kurt Russell as a kid!

Bruce Dern, Lee Van Cleef and Charles Bronson A young Dennis Hopper was in gunsmoke a couple of times as well. George Wendt had the famous pool ball stuck in the mouth episode in mash. Brian Dennehy sp? was on mash as well...I could be wrong but I think Lawrence Fishburn was on one as well.
