Glad I'm not the only one who liked Near Dark, but not sure it's a western. It's more of a horror movie.

excellent point, the director decided on a western style to account for this family of vampires drifting around along the back roads unnoticed. always thought it got overshadowed by The Lost Boys. there's even a similar scene in both movies where the antagonists come over a hill/crest while backlit.

There's probably a scene like that in at least one of the Twilight movies too.

My favorite all time movie (OK not mostest fav but top 5) is The Outlaw Josey Wales. Eastwoods directorial debut and masterful story!

Will Penny hasn't been mentioned yet I don't think. Very good and embodied the morals/virtues of the old west IMO.

Open Range is absolutely great! Best most realistic portrayal of an old west gunfight ever filmed, again IMO!

Pale Rider, another Eastwood great and another portrayal of old west gunfight.

Unforgiven seems realistic for the time. Great acting and storyline!

Dances With Wolves is just a wonderful movie.

Quigley Down Under, even though it is an Australian setting.

All the above I'll watch over and over and have.

Someone mentioned Wind River that was a really good movie embodying Old West virtues, although not classical Old West. I am a fan of Marlin 1895 45/70's even though it kinda looked like a Trapper model to me.

agree with all of these; and also about Open Range having the most realistic gun fight. Of course a couple of times Keven Costner had more than six shots but overall it was about as close to reality as it probably was. Mainly because of how many shots MISSED. The only shots that hit, mostly, were Costner character (who was a real gunfighter so its valid) and they were all very close range hitting stationary targets. It is especially noticeable when he was chasing the head bad guy down the street shooting with his rifle and did not actually hit him even once.

It's funny but they don't make many westerns anymore. Sure they make shows like Yellowstone but not many real westerns. In the 50's and early 60s they made tons of western movies, here in the US and also in Italy and Spain.

This topics reminds me how many great westerns were made and how much I really enjoy them.

If you are interested, There are Western movie channels on Pluto TV that play nothing but old westerns. I like to watch the old TV shows lie The Virginian, Tales of Wells Fargo, Wagon Train (the earlier episodes), Lawman and Maverick. Some fun TV there. I think Pluto has a channel dedicated to The Rifleman. LOL.
