Impact of Highest Paid Receivers

One thing I’m noticing from fans is they look at whoever just one and then that becomes the standard in winning. Eagles had two top 10 receivers and just won the SB. And next year if a team wins with two highly paid receivers….guess what people are gonna want to emulate?

My concern isn’t what other teams pay. Because from the Eagles, Chiefs, Seahawks, etc they were all built different.

But you know what they all had in common?

Cheap talent.
Good trenches play
Good running games
Good rush defense
Good coaches

Bengals didn’t not do well because they had too much tied up. They don’t have a good defense. And it’s not a money thing because even their draft picks aren’t hitting on that side or the guys they are paying.

Go look at all the teams paying money for receivers and you will see how bad they are in other areas that don’t even relate to money.

If Dallas won the SB. You would not say this about the next year. You would say, yeah but it is only one in 30 years. Not good enough.

One of the talking heads (Cowherd maybe) was doing a comparison to how teams with the top 10 highest paid receivers fared. If I remember correctly only ONE (Philly) made the playoffs.

Thats a pretty telling statistic. I don’t see how we can have two of them on the same team, unless we want to be the Bengals.

Teams with 2 WRs being paid top 5 money dont win anything meaningful (Philly last year was the only exception)

Cowboys had a lot of injuries on defenses that kept them from making the playoffs.

Bengals did not have Burrow at QB most of the season, that kept them out of the playoffs.

Vikings had crap at QB all season long, that contributed to them missing the playoffs.

See the pattern..
It is not because teams had high paid WR’s.

What happens when JSN gets paid in Seattle?
Do they now miss the playoffs, I don’t think anyone will predict that.

Good point about JSN who recently said he wants to be the highest paid WR in the League.

Has Puka gotten an extension as well? Will people blame the Rams not making the playoffs on his AAV or the fact that Stafford likely will be retired when the Rams stop making the playoffs?

What this shows is if teams focus resources on offense it's usually at the expense of the defense. Teams with defenses outside the top 12 rarely make the playoffs or go far.

A single year is not close to enough data to make any conclusions. Cowherd is just a shallow yapper. He's not going to do the homework for a 3 or 5 year sample.

I’m sure they would. But you know many will complain that it took 30 years. And repeat it all the time. They just will not be happy they won and look forward to the next season for a repeat.

We traded for Pickens. And just a 3rd rounder.

We should have immediately extended Pickens for at least another season (not guaranteed money) when we traded for him. God, our FO is horrendous.

And not really an exception. Smith’s comparatively reasonable $25 million AAV was not in effect. It only starts next month on 3/11. The value of signing extensions way early.

Lots of reasons for that. The biggest one is some of those teams don’t have a QB. A great WR isn’t worth the price if you don’t have a QB

Doubt he would have done. What incentive would have had to take even a huge deal if no guarantees. Player has to agree to an extension. His agent would have laughed at that deal, even if it was for more than they want now

Sounds like Dallas too.... too much money tied up in a receiver and the QB, and the defense suffers as a result. And now another receiver wants top dollar.
