Impact of Highest Paid Receivers

You know I am right.
You couldn't be more wrong, my friend. After putting up with 30 years of losing, what would we fans do to celebrate just once? My 2 Sports Teams have combined 60 years of NOTHING, except watching fans of others teams win

Seattle isn't paying their QB1, and just let their RB1 go......both after signing key free agents and rolling the dice on their amazing HC. The magic potion worked for them brilliantly
And traded off their WR1 in the off.

How did that become a fact? Of course you can have a good defense, even paying your offensive playmakers.
No one has ever done it.

Cap hits for Eagles WRs in 2024:

AJ Brown: 11 mil
D SMith: 8 mil

It can only be done if the money is pushed down the road. No one has ever won a super bowl w/ 2 huge cap hits on their WRs.

One thing I’m noticing from fans is they look at whoever just one and then that becomes the standard in winning. Eagles had two top 10 receivers and just won the SB. And next year if a team wins with two highly paid receivers….guess what people are gonna want to emulate?

My concern isn’t what other teams pay. Because from the Eagles, Chiefs, Seahawks, etc they were all built different.

But you know what they all had in common?

Cheap talent.
Good trenches play
Good running games
Good rush defense
Good coaches

Bengals didn’t not do well because they had too much tied up. They don’t have a good defense. And it’s not a money thing because even their draft picks aren’t hitting on that side or the guys they are paying.

Go look at all the teams paying money for receivers and you will see how bad they are in other areas that don’t even relate to money.
It should be your concern.

As I just posted, the cap hits for the Eagles of their two WR1s was 11 and 8 mil in 2024.

Yes, Bengal did not do well because they had too much tied up.

I’m sure they would. But you know many will complain that it took 30 years. And repeat it all the time. They just will not be happy they won and look forward to the next season for a repeat.
Actually I doubt many would be that way
30 years without would make just one so sweet

JSN > DK Metcalf
Possibly, but Metcalf was their #1 and they traded him off instead of paying him. JSN is still on his rook deal, drafted in 23. 1st round pick, so they have 2 more years of rook deal for him. It's about what you have to pay them, not who's better.

How many did Brady win with a Top Paid WR?
Moss? did not happen
Welker does not qualify

go through the SB winners of the last 20 years and how many of them had say a top 5 paid WR?

Almost none. And Moss took a lot less to try and win a title w/ NE.

I've been trying to think of one, but I actually can't think of even one example where a team won a super bowl w/ a WR paid at the top of the market.

How much was Evans paid when he won one w/ Brady? Cooper Kupp w/ the Rams in 21?

It would have been a friendlier deal than what we’re doing now.
Not really. You don’t know what we’ve offered since they haven’t started negotiations yet. But they woukd have laughed. Why would any player take a one year extension that gives you the right to cut them, trade them and they have no say on trade or nothing if you cut them. He wanted to hit FA because this is his first negotiated contract.

One of the talking heads (Cowherd maybe) was doing a comparison to how teams with the top 10 highest paid receivers fared. If I remember correctly only ONE (Philly) made the playoffs.

Thats a pretty telling statistic. I don’t see how we can have two of them on the same team, unless we want to be the Bengals.
Again...the Bengals made it to a Superbowl with their WRs. They didn't win but they made it.

And not really an exception. Smith’s comparatively reasonable $25 million AAV was not in effect. It only starts next month on 3/11. The value of signing extensions way early.
Did he not sign this 3 year, 75 million deal on April 14, 2024?

Sounds like Dallas too.... too much money tied up in a receiver and the QB, and the defense suffers as a result. And now another receiver wants top dollar.
Yeah but the problem isn’t the QB and receivers money. Are you getting ROI in Kenneth Murray, Terrence Steele, Daron Bland and Osa? Or how about Ferguson? Or how about Trevon Diggs or Logan Wilson before they got cut? This is the dilemma a lot of teams find themselves in.

Right because the Cowboys ACTUALLY spent more on defense last year than offense. That's blasphemous I know but it's a fact that gives CONTEXT. The breakdown is interesting as well:

Again...the Bengals made it to a Superbowl with their WRs. They didn't win but they made it.
Again....only before they got paid. The charge to the super bowl was led by stalwarts Reader and Ogunjobi. They pushed Mahomes around in the 2nd half like no tomorrow, rendering him completely ineffective, allowing Burrows to mount a comeback.

You gotta look at their cap hits before you make that statement. Chase was in his 2nd year and still on his rook deal. Tee Higgins was in his 3rd year and still on his rook deal.

Of course, because they overpaid Diggs, Bland, and Osa. And then spent 7 mil on career bust Kenneth Murray. IR man Hooker made like 8 mil.

The spent, but not anywhere near wisely.

Yes, that is a huge problem, but spending huge chunks of salary cap on the wrong players is an even bigger problem.

Did he not sign this 3 year, 75 million deal on April 14, 2024?
Yes. A three year deal, $75 million, $51 million guaranteed, for the 2026, 2027, 2028 seasons. Some teams are proactive signing the players they know they want to keep. The Cowboys can’t even decide who they want to keep.

Had the Cowboys made an appropriate offer to Pickens the moment they traded for him they might have got him to sign. It would have still been in the $30 million per season range, as his agent is smart and aggressive. Now, they have the mess they’re in. They’ll tag him, he won’t sign it right away, they can’t trade him until he signs the tag, Jerry will have to grant Mulugheta the right to negotiate with other teams, if they can get what they want they’ll inform Jerry, Jerry will then try to work out a trade with a team that knows they’re the team that made Pickens the offer he wants, if Jerry can’t get a trade he wants by July 15 he’s stuck with Pickens on an expensive tag, Pickens waits to the day before the season starts, missing camp and preseason without penalty as he’s not under contract, signs the tag. And gets paid over $1.5 million per week, guaranteed regardless of injury and effort, for the next 18 weeks, and is a free agent again March 2027.

Jerry is a terrible businessman and a worse GM. He stinks at drafting players, as well.

It’s a cop out. Let me explain….the focus is Burrow, Jamar and Higgins…..

Here are cap hits from 2025

Hendrickson - 24 million
Cam Taylor Britt 4 million
Orlando Brown 16 million
Bj Hill - 8 million
Mike Gesicki 7 million
Joseph Assa 6 milliom
Geno Stone 6 million
TJ Slaton 5.4 million

Every single one of these guys underachieved….over 60 million plus. But the focus is on Higgins and Chase who actually do their jobs. Nevermind Burrow missed half the year….
